I have been searching through quite a few 72S Kennedy Half Dollar rolls and have been finding this reverse that has flat letters at the top of STATES of AMERICA, I find one in about 2 rolls, 1:40 (reference attached photos of normal rounded letters and flat letters). Could I get some opinions if you think this might be significant enough to be a new reverse die variety? Also I'm wondering if this variety could be in the entire 72 series as well. Has anybody seen this in the bussiness strikes?

    Thanks for your help,

I went and checked past auctions at Heritage because of your post, sure enough you can find them. As for whether or not it warrants a new variety I can't say. But since they appear to be fairly common I rather doubt it.

Thanks for the responce...when you say you can find them, are you refering to 72 BS with the flat letters on S of A RDV? Could you give me a link to them?

    Thanks,

I found examples of the same flat letters as you posted on both Proofs and business strikes. Nothing was noted on the slabs of course. But those flat spots were sure there.

To see the pics you have to be a member of Heritage - if you're not sign up. It's free. Then just click on the link at Step 2 - the auction archives and do a search for '72 Kennedy. That's all I did. Then just examine the pics. They don't all have flat spots, but more than enough of them do.
