I recently started looking for new errors trading in coin rolls for coin rolls at the supermarket, bank, 7-11 etc.. I have been successful so far in my first 3 attempts, I bagged a Arizona state quarter with two extra reeds over the initials and the top part of the B in liberty filled in. Yesterday I found a 1943P war nickel in a roll from the bank which was the first silver I have found in circulation in my time as a numismatist. So I come to the 3rd day of my search today and I just found a 1997D double die obverse, The "O" and the "D" in God are doubled very strongly the extra line of the D goes through the D and has a strong shadow on the outside as well, and the O looks like two O's overlapped but the D is beautiful and I would say the O is just pretty. I was wondering if anyone has heard about this coin? Is this a famous one? Has this one been found before? What kind of value would I be looking at or should I keep it? How do I make this coin knowledge to the rest of the coin world if it is a rare find that isn't well known. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I look forward to your advice's. Jonathan
I don't have a camera that's good enough to do it justice I tried taking a picture and it is really hard to tell from the picture let me try again and see what I can come up with any good ideas on how to take a better picture?
My attempt at a picture to show the 1997D double die obverse I used my loop and attached it to the camera but I just can't show the angle that shows the beautiful o and d optical illusion look, but I did my best hope it helps.
If you click on the 2nd and 3rd picture it enlarges with a program and with that you can see it but the picture is not doing it justice.
It's there just couldn't show it with a camera. The only thing you can barely see in the picture is like a blurriness on the right side of the D and O but if I tilt the coin towards the twelve o clock position you can see a clear outline of a D above the D and an O above and to the right of the O say in the 2 o clock position. Also with the right light you can see the straight line of the D running through the middle of the D right next to the original more bold D it's really cool. Maybe it's not a double die I believe they say a poor mans 1955 double die penny is one that is not as blatant and I forgot what they called this type of error but it was something other than double die but my wife knows nothing of coins and I had her look at it and tell me whats different and she pointed out the D and the O looked like one on top of another. I just took another picture with a flash light my loop and a camera and it came out enough to see the shadow on the side of the D and the line on the inside
This is probably from worn out dies. I have found lots of coins while roll searching with what looks like the letters almost completely seperated , they are not worth anything over face value. The valuable coins are the ones that are struck with a coin die that already had the doubling on the die.
