I'm still thinking retained cud since the rim is still present in the cud area.

If it was a retained cud, wouldn't the lettering still be there?

Seems like this is what the mojority of y'all think it is. Lemme ask this however. What would cause the top of Lincoln's hair to show up on the very bottom of the cud?

Wouldn't a cud leave a feature raised above the field of the coin? From the photographs the area in question appear to be below the fields. I'd guess pmd or struck through.

How would this be a strike through? Your saying the coin got split upwards to create the clip? And wouldn't the letters still be showing at the top?

I do believe it's a cud, but it's a rather peculiar looking one. It's unusually flat except for its outer margin, which is thickened. That thickened margin seems too wide to represent a displaced design rim. That and the absence of lettering makes this unlikely to be a retained cud. I would like to look at it more closely, if possible. You can e-mail me directly at mdia1@aol.com. -- Mike Diamond

By the way, the Cud Book does contain some errors. Some listed crescentic cuds are actually die attrition errors (a form of peripheral die damage). One or two listed cuds are fakes or post-strike damage.

I've figured out what's going on with this cud. The striking pressure was a tad low, meaning that the coin metal didn't rise very high into the void in the die face. Second, the proto-rim of the planchet was unsually well-developed. You're seeing the persistent proto-rim along the outer margin of the cud.

very interesting mike, what exactly do you mean by a well developed planchet?

And what should I write as the name of this coin on my holder? Just a cud? Or Low Pressure Cud?

I said that the proto-rim of the planchet was well-developed. When a blank is sent through the upset mill, it is rolled and squeezed to a smaller diameter. This pushes up a proto-rim along the margin of the planchet. The proto-rim is entirely different from the design rim that is generated by the strike.

As far as what to label it, "cud" will do.

Thank you again for your help! Greatly appreciated!
The cud will be a nice addition to my small Lincoln cuds collection. :D

Got my Cud Book in the mail yesterday, immediately went to the right page and found it. LC-84-14 is correct. But man I can't stop looking through this book! :smile
