I have decided to attempt a slabbed version of Dansco 7070. Here are the first few coins:

Wow, those are nice. Great job so far! I am still trying to find a 7070 album, as they apparently don't make them anymore. Having them slabbed would help me with authenticity, but i'm more in the VG-XF range on most of those coins. Are you going to do the optional gold page? Good luck with the rest of them!

We'll have to see about the gold page. I don't mind paying the price for the $10s and $20, but I've priced some of the smaller gold in MS63 and up, and you can buy a lot of coins (or a seated dollar) for the price of those smaller gold coins.

Been working on that set slabbed for the past two years. Im buying them all in AU58. It a little more than half done. Be sure to look at the NGC registry. They have a set based right off the 7070 and take PCGS and NGC slabs. I want to see better pics of that 1908 nickel. The luster looks pretty schweeeet from the pic you have.

My hardest part so far with the set is finding nice copper. Everything is junk at shows around me for early copper, but there are some nice coins on the national circuit and/or online.

The NGC registry is great. I like how they allow both PCGS and NGC slabbed coins. I agree with the sentiment that the old coppers are hard to find locally. Same for the half dimes and other challenging coins in this set.

I have come across a number of good looking coins online, but I'm still getting acclimated to the concept of online buying, and trying to judge what amounts I'm comfortable spending. Where I might spend $600 when I can view a coin in hand, the thought of spending that same $600 on eBay from a scan of a coin seems a little foreign to me. Like everything else, I guess you get use to it.

Very nice. I tried to do a similar set in NGC slabs. But when the economy caused me to sell, the type set was the first thing to go. I couldn't part with my Walkers and Mercs that I'd been working on for so long.

For some reason, when I read the title "Slabbed version of Dansco 7070", I imagined a big brown Dansco folder encased in an extra-extra-extra large sized PCGS/NGC slab.

EDIT: By the way, forgot to say -- awesome set!

    Looks good so far!

I was building a Dansco 7070 set at one time using high grade slabbed coins... but I just cracked them all out of the holders and stuck them in the album... OUCH!!!!!

You can read about that experience here if you want to check that out:

I remember reading your story when I was doing the Album version. I cracked a coin or two when I did that set, but stuck to AU.

    Your set is very nice.
