I wrote to both of my Senators anout proposing a redesign of the Kennedy Half to make it smaller and with all of the tactile features I already told you guys about, time and time again. I wasn't really thinking about writing to my Congress people for a while, but since it takes about 2 years for a new coin design to come out, and its near the end of 2012, and the new halves would probably have to start being minted no later than mid to late 2013, I figured NOW would be the time to act. Here are my letters to the Senators: ------------------------------------------------ Dear Senator, I must once again email you to ask you if tou could do some legislation regarding a half dollar coin redesign. The reason is, in 2014 it will be the 50th Aniversary of the Kennedy half, and since it normally takes about 2 years for a new coin design to come out, this year is the perfect time to propose this measure. Could you please do legislation to make the half smaller, thicker then all other U.S. coins, yet thin enough to still work in vending machine slots, and maybe of a slight polygon shape similar to some of Canada's coins and a copper color to distinguish it from other coins, as well as a few other tactile features to tell it apart from pennies? Please consider talking with the Senate Banking Commitee about this, as this may be a way to get halves back into circulation and make less needs for large amounts of quarters, and people such as seniors who do not like heavy change, may like a half that weighs less than one quarter, let alone two quarters, which the current half currently weighs. And please try to get the vending industry interested. They have been pushing for a circulating dollar coin and removal of the $1 note, but because most Americans opose such a move, and the quarter's purchasing power is declining, the half might be the answer, seeing as how, arcade games, gumball machines, toy crane machines etc. are all costing 50 cents now, wouldn't it make sense for these machines to take halves instead of quarters? Also, those 25 cent 5 stick packs of gum, they now cost 35 cents, so a quarter can not even buy those anymore, and with a half, if people used them for that pack of gum, and got that 15 cent back in change, they might get the idea of "Wow! A coin that you spend and actually get change back from! Not a bill!" Again, please take this half redesign idea into consideration, and talk to the Senate Banking Commitee about it, as with the quarter's declining purchasing power, and American's continued oposition to dollar coins, I think that a circulating smaller half dollar is an idea whose time has come. ------------------------------------------------ I still want to email or otherwise write to the Secretary of the Treasury, the U.S. Mint, my House member, and the Federal Reserve System. Hopefully the upcoming aniversary of the Kennedy half will give me the edge. (Oh, and no, this idea does not involve anything to do with dogs)
Ah, rickmp. I can always count on your smart aleck remarks, although I can somewhat agree with this one that I might just be :dead-horse: but still, I figure its worth a shot. And if the form letters entertain me, whats so wrong with doing it?
I was going to post the same thing but then I decided to not bump the thread. oops, just bumped it...
LOL, If I was the person who received this email, I would print it out and put it in a scrap book! Anytime my kids brought home anything less than an "A", I would make them read the letter...
poor horse, I feel sad for it. If they do anything with the halves, they will probably release 4 new ones each year with State flags on them or something like that.
This would most likely make me (if I was on a schedual and had limmited time for reading such letters) delete it imediatly. The idea you propose is interesting, but I think at first it would just bring on inflation. I think it would be better to not disproportion the US coins, as it is possible that at some point we may have to start minting coins in silver again(not likely, but could happen, in which case this would be a stumbling block)
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man." It's absolute folly to have one-cent, five-cent, and even ten-cent coins today. The half-cent was discontinued in 1857; today, the dime has less buying power than the half-cent did at the end of its run. If anything, we should ditch those small coins, and reboot with quarters, halves, dollars, half-eagles and eagles. Or just revaluate, with 100 old dollars = 5 or 10 newbux. It won't happen, of course. People love paper, and they'll stick with it until the end of physical cash. But I can't fault people who ask for it.
My thoughts exactly. I would hate the idea of "quarter eagles" ($2.50) but would favor an even "$2" coin in this mix. If people love their paper, and we need to have higher denomination coins, then, lets reissue all high paper currency denominations as well. and add $200 and $2,000 bills as well, as I have said. After all, a $50 bill is about a $500 bill in 1969, when it was last issued, and a $1,000 bill is about a $10,000 bill when both denominations were last issued. So the druggies would only have to carry one strap of $10,000 bills to launder one million dollars, big whoop. They'd find away around it even if we withdrew every denomination of coin and bill we had now, and reissued the half cent and just used that as our only denomination anyway. Or better yet, how about a quarter cent coin, or a one mil coin? That one mil coin may make people happy who want to get their money's worth at the gas pump.
Thank You 19Lyds! :hail: I know my ideas are long shots, but who knows? I may fight to the end. At least one thing is happening that I wanted, with the next currency redesign: The redesign of the $2 bill. Its a start.
You be surprised what type of email gets deleted and what makes it through, in fact emails that look very professional are often filtered out due to belief they are from lobbyists groups posing as individuals.
I often read about somebodys plan for doing something different with our coinage, but nobody ever does anything about it. Drago actually made an effort to do something proactive and people think that it is a ridicules idea. I agree with many of your ideas and really wish they would do something different solely as a cost savings. Good luck Drago!!!
