I started compiling a list of the BEP currency collectibles that have been offered for sale. Before I go any further I wanted to see if a list exists anywhere else. I started the list using the info from this site: http://currencyamerica.com/about/bep I'd like to document info such as original sale price, # of notes\sets available, etc. I contacted the BEP asking for a list but got the following response: "We do have archival records of the products that we have sold over the years; however we do not post them on our website for the general public. We tend not to post past products because many of them have sold out and/or are no longer available. What's currently displayed on the website is what's available. If there is a specific product that you would like information about we can research it for you." Thanks.
Hi Moonshine, I say go for it. The BEP is not well known for keeping precise records. I am still curious what the issues price of the 2003 $2 Evolution series was. I can't seem to find it or why they stopped at 2000 sets from Minneapolis? You have my thumbs up and will pitch-in if I can. Dave actually, I think most of your information may come from Derek Moffitt's Site www.uspapermoney.info/general/. You won't find original prices, but you will find an almost complete list of Currency sheets sold/printed since 1981 by crossreferencing his uncut sheet page with his survey page. Its like an online encyclopedia. He's started this 10 years ago this october. I came accross it when I 1st started out and used it since. plus side is chett has nothing on there to sell. Down side is no "lucky Money" figures (except 1995 $5 H-block sheets).
I haven't had a lot of time to work on this but I managed to get a blog started and some info up there. We'll see where this goes. Any input on layout etc. is appreciated. Thanks. http://bepcollectiblecurrency.blogspot.com/
That's a great job you're doing so far Moonshine. I just visited the site and commented on the 2003 $2 Premium Federal Reserve Set. If you don't mind me asking, how have you verified "initial selling" prices for the BEP premium collectible products ?
Thanks. I came across this article from Paper Money Values: http://www.currencyamerica.com/pdf/PMV-PREMIUM88.pdf I may have to contact the BEP for alot of the holes I have for prices, serial ranges, etc. Hopefully they will help.
Regarding the 2003 $2 stars: I was about to mention that a total of 10,000 notes were issued per district, 2000 in the sets and 8000 individually. The printings ran up to 00016000*, but not all the notes were released. The Dallas district was apparently the exception, as $2 K..* notes from this same serial range appear in the Texas C&C set, so that all 16,000 were apparently issued. But I notice that the PDF article you linked says there's "controversy" over just how many notes were issued--and I can't remember where I read the above information, so it may or may not be official. Sigh.... Yes, I hope you can get some official numbers out of the BEP--they're sorely needed for many of the products in this area of collecting.
I have a friend over at the Collectors Universe (PCGS) Forum selling a 2003 $2 Premium Federal Reserve Set (12 Star notes, serials matching) for LESS than the initial selling price. It is set # 00001706*, and it's on the "Buy-Sell-Trade" area for $395 (includes shipping)....if anyone is interested.
I only wish i had that kind of money, or i would right now, my funds are reserved for a new scanner. What was the initial price on that set?
In regard to the 2003 $2 Star notes; the Minneapolis notes Serial#s 00002001 - 4000 were matched with the originals and sold as the $2 Evolution set. Don't know the price as I bought a Pair on Ebay for about $100. You'll find the same set at Currency America. osb13
According to MoonShine's investigative information, the set originaly sold for $495 from the BEP and sold out almost immediatly.
1999 $10 Premium Federal Reserve Set I picked up a 1999 $10 Premium Federal Reserve Set with the note number 99999226 for $295. I see on Moonshines website the list price from the BEP was $595. Have these sets lost their value?
I had the set on my watch list and was thinking someone got a steal on that set. I would have bid on it if I had the funds.
DM1 there is a set on eBay going for less than that right now. Item # 261078274872 So waiting two years might save someone some money.
I'm watching that one now, in fact. There are some other premium sets being offered for less than BEP issue prices too - too many temptations!
I called the BEP to find out info on the Premium Historical Portfolios and they were to no help. They said since they are not offered anymore they couldnt give me any information about the product and told me to call a dealer. I called a coin dealer at home and asked him about the Portfolios and he said they are packaged nicely and have a great presentation but the bills are not worth any more than face value. What do you think about that? With that said I feel like I might have spent to much on the set I purchased.
