Purchased from another eBay B.I.N. listing, and at a bargain price! :hail:

It's an O.101a, and a very late die stage of this particular die state of this particular die marriage, with the die crack @ star #1 extending and ultimately forming a die break. :thumb: Definitely an eye-catching variety with plenty of dramatic die cracks, breaks, and clashes.

You may think I'm out of my mind for grading it out as VF20 on the 2x2. This variety is known for poor strikes in later die states, but I doubt the graders at PCGS would know any better and would slap it with an F15 or even F12. :rollling:

So, I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts as far as the grade goes on this one... How much of the weakness do you believe was caused by genuine wear in circulation and how much - if any - is the result to a weak strike?

 

My first half cent, and also my first coin photography attempt. It's NGC VF 20 BN, cross 4 with stems C-9.

 

1913 Matte Proof Lincoln. (PCGS PR64BN) "Taste the Rainbow!" I have an incredibly lucky story on how I was able to acquire this striking coin (too long to write!). Just say it was a million to one shot and involved my good friend Robec. I targeted this coin because, along with my other two Matte Proof Lincolns, this new addition allows my small 3-coin MPL collection to cover the full spectrum of the rainbow (red-orange-yellow-green-blue-indigo-violet). Now that is a feat! It's pretty amazing what that sulfur-laden tissue paper in which the U.S. Mint wrapped these coins (before shipping them out) did to these early proofs. It seems no two coins toned quite the same way.

Just received from eBay. Better photos coming after cracking it out of this thick, heavy, marked up slab.

 

First of all, that's a beautiful coin.
Second of all, do you have any ultraviolet or infrared toned coins?

 

And why is Pink not on the spectrum? Haha. It never is. Not even the rainbow.

 

Cazkaboom, if you look closely at my new 1913, I do see pink color, even though it's not an official rainbow color. (The best representation of pink is on the obverse, near the rim, between 7 and 8 o'clock.)

Brad, I know your question was "tongue in cheek" -- but in terms of IR and UV, neither are visible to the eye. IR is simply heat, so with the coin at room temperature, it is emitting small amounts of IR -- this could be picked up by an IR camera (or heat sensing camera, like what they use to determine if your house has heat leaks around windows and doors). The coin would emit more IR if I heated the coin up. UV is what causes sunburns, and I am not sure how any coin could emit UV as a source, but I suppose it could reflect UV. Say if you had a nice shiny proof and used it as a mirror to reflect sunlight onto your skin or something. Interesting questions.
