Here are coins I've recently added to my collection. The first is a dime that isn't really remarkable, except that my dad gave it to me. He'd been using it as a ball marker when he played golf...:smile The second is a $1.00 trade token for the Society for Creative Anachronism.
Good, that posted. I actually had quite a bit typed out, but it got lost in cyberspace, and I'm up past my bedtime as it is. I had the copper SCA token for a few years. I don't know how long, really, or where I got it. I just had it in a jar of stuff and thought it was some kind of cheap souvenir or replica. Finally, though, a couple weeks ago I looked it up online, and found out that it was minted by the University of St. Hildegard, which looks to me like it's some kind of "moneyers guild" or minting business officially recognized by the SCA for providing trade tokens. These guys try to replicate medieval minting processes (though not entirely successfully; it looks like they've had to depart from suspected or known methods for various reasons, or just make up answers for gaps in knowledge) and sell the coins at SCA gatherings. These coins are then used to purchase items from vendors at these gatherings. The tokens are minted for various fictitious kingdoms (though maybe these kingdoms correspond to actual existing geographic regions, or to SCA chapters/clubs/what-have-you; I don't know). This coins is for the Kingdom of Caid, and bears the names of al Tomuki and Luciana, King and Queen of Caid. See, that's what I love about coin collecting. On a regular basis, I look into some little mystery or read some odd tidbit or learn some explanation about something I hadn't even realized needed explaining, and I say to myself, "Sheesh, well, I had no idea about that! That's a new one on me." There are an infinite number of stones to turn over in this hobby. I love it.

Hello! I see this is a really old topic, but thought I could help solve the mystery othe SCA coin. Perhaps you have since found all the info you desire, but what the heck! The thing about that Mercury Dime is it was from your Dad. Some day in the future if you keep that coin, you will always remember your Dad because of that coin. Yes you can always buy a similar coin, but the one from your Dad can not be replaced.
Thanks for posting this, it's interesting that they made up events and dates for those events... they went a long way in the story , it's almost a dungeons and dragons campaign by itself.
