Are the whiteman books (the ones you can get for like $3-4) ok to store coins in for a long period of time?

None of the folder style books are good for long term storage. The old Whitman albums are good, but will tone your coins which is not necessarily a bad thing.

i use the whitman classic albums (20.00-30.00)
i think those folder types are more for beginning collectors

Use mylar or mylar-faced cardboard flips in boxes. You can always ruin your coins with toning later if they are un-toned. But you can't reverse the process. :)
