I am going to start a swiss collection. My long term goal is too have a 5 rappen through 5 franc coin of every year from 1890-present. I plan to go back to Switzerland next year for a couple of weeks and while I'm there I hope to start on the more recent years while im there. My question is, What is the best method to store these coins? Are there coin folders for swiss coins?

I also hope to have in my collection at some time many of their gold coins. My great-grandmother had a swiss coin collection which I hope to look at when I'm back in Switzerland. The collection includes the beautiful 1925 100 chf vreneli!

(At 17, I plan for this to be a collection that will require many, many and many years to accomplish.)

I'm a Swiss American. Actually really an American Swiss.
We don't use ebay much here but www.ricardo.ch. There you can find many coins. If you can use your grandmother's address and manage to get hold of a Swiss e-banking account (difficult nowadays), you can open an account and bid on the auctions. You usually get what you bid for. I once bought a fake American gold coin, the seller fully returned my money. Otherwise never had a bad experience.
    Hope this helped you.

I have a swiss collection as well. I'm working on the silver issues 1901 to date, except for the 5 francs before 1931 (you will find those very pricy), and including the 10 Francs (I have 4, on is a duplicate). I'm 2/3rds of the way done on the 5 Francs (including the '52 which I just picked up @ANA), and perhaps will work on the pre 31 5 Francs (of which I only own the '25) after that.

I like the "long term" plan, as there are many valuble coins that are included that would overwhelm anyone.

One suggestion: Don't buy hole fillers in poor grades.

    Good luck.

Quite a daunting task to get all the Swiss coins of that period. Don't forget all the wonderful commemoratives they have minted. Here is one of my favorites.

I am jealous of anyone who gets to go to Switzerland. Hands-down the most beautiful country I have ever had the privilege to visit, twice now, once when I was 18, again when I was 55. Lovely people, lovely coins, great food, and scenery that will break your heart. Have a wonderful trip, physically and numismatically speaking!

    Best Regards,

    George

Thanks everyone for the information. Just got back from a two day trip to miami. Caught the first preseason game for the dolphins vs bucs. Also caught a marlins vs dodgers game at the new Marlins park. All in all, a good trip! :)

Yea I should be getting my swiss citizenship(hopefully) within the next two years. My dad is in the process of filing for duel-citizenship and with me becoming 18 in 2 days, there is some paperwork I need to complete also. Ive been to switzerland four times previously and love it! The longest duration was for a month back when i was 15.

Their coinage has a simplistic beauty that i love! I really am excited to start this collection! =D

Enjoy your birthday, particularly because it will be a special one. :) If ricardo.ch can only be used with a Swiss bank account, you could still buy coins from muenzauktion.com (auctions) or the "sister site" ma-shops.com (fixed prices). Just make sure that the seller accepts whatever means of payment you can offer.

Also, keep Ripley's recommendation in mind. For myself I would not find it very interesting to collect multiple years of the very same issue(s), but of course we all collect differently. The Swiss do have some very nice commems though.

Thanks - used to have many more I am getting out of shooting medals and talers in favor of my Habsburg Taler set. Painful but needed as the budgetary needs to expand that collection are greater.

    Beautiful specimens Zohar!!!

Just picked out some chf at a local coin shop. Parents bought them for me as part of my birthday gift. Some dirty ones but really happy with them! A great start to future collection. =D
