Hello all, I posted about a 7 Kreuzer Franc in the "whats it worth" section, and haven't gotten any replies, so I figured I'd ask you guys your opinions on it, since I'd think this would be the subforum that was perused by those knowledgeable about this coin. So any information you could supply I'd appreciate. Heres a link to the thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t210928/ Thanks.
Very interesting. Looked it up in Krause its Austria KM 2129. Value $75 UNC. With the overstrike, value ????? With the Napolianic wars raging, stuff happens. Very rare indeed.
Thanks alot. Good point about the wars, I didnt think of that. I should have, considering that I'm reading the Aubrey-Maturin books.
Overstrikes are very common for this type, even for other mint marks. From what I've seen it does not significantly affect the value. This is the same story as with the 1918 and 1919 Italian 20 centesimi coins that are struck on 1894 coins of the same denomination.
Thanks. Yeah, it my understanding that these coins were all overstruck 12 Kreuzers--there was some problem with those, according to the internet. I was curious if this example was unusual in the strength of the visibility of the old strike, and that it is perfectly symmetrically aligned at a right angle to the 7 Kreuzer strike. The other examples that I was able to find online didn't seem to have the old strike quite as visible, and they were at various angles to the 7 Kreuzer strike. People like symmetry, but I didnt know if it would have any effect on this coin or not.
Someone buying it as an error coin would likely pay a premium, but people that specialize in this type of coin would not.
