That is a pre-decimal Half Penny (Irish: Leat Pingin) by the way.

Percy Metcalfe, a British man, won the competition with his superior designs for the Irish Free State's coinage in 1927. These coins were first issued in 1928 and circulated alongside British coins until decimalisation in the 1970's.

My 2 favorite resources for this sort of thing are:

    1) Google : Google nearly any writing on any coin, and you're likely to at least get a starting point. In this case, googling "leat pingin" returns several results. The very first result is titled "Irish Coins & Banknotes". Without even visiting the site, you've got yourself a starting point. Googling "eire" reveals, again in the first result, that "Eire" is the irish name for the island of Ireland.

    2) http://en.numista.com/ : Numista has some fairly extensive catalogs of coins from throughout the world. Knowing that what you have is an Irish coin, from 1942, and it's "1/2" of something, will let you search Irish coins there, and rather quickly lead you to the 1/2 Pingin of 1939-1967, where you can learn about its composition and mintages, and see links to auctions featuring it, and even see other users of the site that may be interested in trading this type of coin. :)

By all means, there's absolutely nothing wrong with hopping on CT and asking, just as you've done...but if you'd like to do some digging on your own, those are great places to start. :)

Sure, the European Union exists - guess where I am. :) But the EU is not a country. Also, while colloquially we often use "Europe" in the sense of European Union, there are several countries in Europe that are not member states of the EU, or of the euro area (which by and large is a subset of the EU). When I saw that first post, I read the "leaning towards Europe" part just as I might write "I'm leaning towards Asia" if I have a coin with an "Asian looking" script ...

See below - unfortunately still a little too large to be an emoticon. ;)

Some more info about the coin: That halfpenny was minted between 1939 and 1967 (basically the same design was used on the Irish Free State coins 1928-1937 by the way). The 1942 issue is the most common year, with about 6.9 million pieces minted. Value is less than a dollar, I think, but those animal designs - they also had chicken, salmon, etc. - I like a lot ...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction gboulton. I will surley use this method
for my research going forward although I really enjoy posting in the forums. It is
more fun reading everyones opinions and explanations about the coins I have than just looking them up, Besides where other than CT can you learn about coins AND
get a lesson in geography ;) ......Pat
