1996 penny. my first cud? why are letters missing on the back?

    bryantallard show me the money....so i can look through it

    so if this is a cud, which looks like pics i have seen, i noticed there are different types? rim cud? retained cud? and so on. what kind is this? are the missing letters on the back a result of the front? or is it 2 errors in one? advice appreciated.

    That's a beauty! Yes, the weakness on the back is a result of the missing part of the die that created the cud on the coin.

    That's right. To elaborate a little... The cud is part of the die that broke off leaving a void in the die. This does not create the pressures needed within the striking chamber to transfer the opposing reverse design.

    Sure. That's a decent sized cud and worth $10-$40 depending on condition.

    Yes, that is a very nice cud and an error collector would pay a premium for it. Nice find!

    there are only 2 i really use. coppercoins.com great for comparison photos and you realize there are ALOT more errors than listed in the red book. 2ndly. right where you are. everyone here has been great and they are helpful if you ask :)

    as an after thought..... there is no way to tell if its a WAM right?

    From the pic provided, it looks like a CAM to me.

    hmmm. are there any WAM on the 1996? I thought it was just 98 99 and 00. and CAM on the 92

    The reported 1996 wide AM was never confirmed, and the story that surrounds it is suspect. I would not believe one exists until I see it.
