Which is better at protecting coins, or is there barely a difference? I have a few bu wheat cent in those cardboard coin flips and i was thinking about putting them in my dansco album, what do you think?
Long story short...the flips are better for "protecting" coins. Simply because the coin is exposed to less air than in a Dansco. Not to mention the inserting of a coin into the Dansco and the plastic slides can sometimes be harmful. Neither one is a long term problem solver though.
Usually flips do a better job of stopping toning than albums do. If you are worried about it losing its full red color then you may wish to put it in the album. If its MS Brown then the album would be fine. It just seems either these albums let in more air, or actually leak chemicals that tone, because I have never seen an album where coins have been stored long term where the BU coins did not tone. In fact, a lot of the colorfully toned coins on the market come from this source, BU coins placed in albums in the 60's or 70's, and now are all toned.
I forgot to mention that they are steel cents, I've never seen one tone so should I just put them in the dansco? they wont lose luster or anything right?
Steel cents will tone. The only issue I have with Danso albums is the sliding plastic. But, if you insert the coin in it's proper possition, which is at the bottom of the hole, sliding the plastic won't scratch the coins. I have all my sets in Dansco albums and haven't scratched a coin yet. And, it's so dry where I live I haven't noticed any toning, even on pieces I've had for 30+ years. Storage environment is more the problem than materials as far as damaging coins. Guy
do you mean push the coin in until its against the bottom layer of plastic and cant go any deeper? because that's what I've been doing haha
Very true. Sorry, its common to forget about those lucky enough to not live in the upper midwest and its summer humidity.
Lucky? It's 123 degrees today...and thats cooler than normal for this time of year. But, I should have mentioned, even here PVC is bad. I think it's bad in every environment. It doesn't have to go that far because then it's rubbing against the bottom plastic. But just above the bottom is a small shelf where you push it to. I just like the look of Dansco albums, but like every storage device you need to be careful. Guy
