Hello all, Not sure about what price to offer for 10k+ buffalo nickels. All mixed dates and mm. Backstory is I bought about 125k wheat cents from this guy I met on Craigslist in about 3 installments. Last night I got the last 50 k or so cents. Then after he says he has a s**t ton of buffalo nickels. I said I'm interested. But really I have no idea what to pay. My Craigslist ad says looking to buy wheat cents, which I know all about. But I know very little about the value of these. Thank you for any responses. Btw don't know if this is worth mentioning but he has them all sorted by date, mm, and condition in rolls of 40 pc. And that was how I bought the wheaties as well. I don't know if this increases the value but it does make them much easier to sell on eBay.
I'd say do a quick look up on ebay. I've seen full date rolls go anywhere between $10 to $30 while partial or no dates go from $1.00 to $10.00. Get a good average number to start with in what you think you could make from them (if you plan to sell), then offer him about 40-50% of that price to start out. That's how I'd likely approach it.
Just to clarify each roll is a single date and mm. Dates on all coins are readable. Coins with partial or no dates are seperate, and I plan on buying those as well. I doubt there are any rolls of key dates. But there may be singles or partial rolls. Just trying to get an idea of what a dealer would offer then offer slightly more.
The big plus for acquiring such a large group of buff's, are the many attributed varieties from 3-3.5 legs, two feathers, DDO's, RPM's. It can be a gold mine for the patient collector that doesn't mind going through such a vast group of coins. And can be profitable if the buy price is right.
You're not giving us enough info to even make a generic guess with. How much were you paying for the cents? This has nothing to do with you personally, but I question anyone buying for profit who needs advice on how much to pay. Obviously I do not know you, but it seems a lot of people these days think of buying and selling coins as some great money maker. Of course money can be made, but rarely is it as easy as placing a craigslist buy ad, relisting on ebay, and running fistfuls of cash to the bank... at least if doing a fair and honest business. I do not mean to sound harsh, but if you cannot come up with a number that works well with your reason for buying, you might want to reconsider or at least spend a little more time thinking this through. To get an idea of what you MIGHT be able to sell for, search completed ebay listings while keeping fees/expenses in-mind. Also, as long as you understand that with most of these coins will not bring the individual prices, it wouldn't hurt to buy a CDN. Be more concerned with your situation/market and less about what someone else might be willing to pay.
Or, you could get a rough breakdown of the lot and ask around here, (cough), and simply see what someone here, (cough cough), would be willing to pay and add a couple hundred profit right off the top for your trouble. Just an idea.
Hi. I paid $0.03/ coin for 125k cents rolled according to dates and mm and grades including all years and mints except for obvious keys dating from 1909-1958pds. I am buying to sell for profit. The reason for my question on buffs is I really don't know what I can expect to net on eBay auctions. I've been collecting/ buying and selling cents for years so I have a good handle on the market for these coins just not on nickels. Btw I save all the nicest ones for my personal collection. That's why I started doing this in the first place the love of the hobby.
