Tell ya what- maybe next January, if you’re up for some quick company, I’ll make a special side trip, and come to you.

Rob, because of you and your outstanding running commentary (and your side trip to visit my friend), my wife has already asked me why I don't go to the FUN festivities. She said I should meet up with you next year. I told her you're already spoken for ;)

I'm hoping to hold her to that endorsement next year.

Sounds like you’ve got a keeper, there!

Ladymarcovan went with me to one of the early-2000s FUN shows (‘03, maybe). Victoria, then a toddler, was in a stroller, as I recall. She’s a junior in college now. (Victoria, not Ladymarcovan).

My wife has given that green light as well for us to go down there for FUN, but I don’t think I’ll make next year as we have the boy getting married this coming September and then we are taking a Caribbean cruise May 2024.

It's a hoard coin so not very distinctive. There are lots of nice VF-XF pillars with good circ cameo to be had for a fraction of that cost. Portraits are just not very interesting unless you can find a decent "rat-nose" 8 escudos of Carlos III.

Thanks for the report and the re-appearance of your famous hat which I remembered years ago.

Has anyone tried to approximate the demographic shift in owners of the high end coins? Ie, where they are coming from in industry, banking, inherited money, etc.?

I’m still not “high end” and never will be, but it was due to some inheritance money that I had a somewhat bigger budget to blow this year than in years past. Previously, I stayed down in three-figure territory for my entire show budget, and my biggest single purchases would have seldom been over the $250 level.

Paradoxically, in those leaner times when I had relatively little money to spend, I had even more fun, and got my mind blown even more by the goods on display.

I’m not saying I didn’t have fun on this trip- I certainly did- but it wasn’t as exciting to me as the shows in the early 2000s were. And that’s entirely from my viewpoint, not because the show is in any way diminished. It seemed pretty well attended and there was more stuff there than I could have examined in an entire week.

I guess I’ve just become slightly jaded.

Wow? What an interesting, and entertaining thread to read. LordM, I really appreciate your effort to maintain a running commentary and all the news items. And the photos almost made it seem like I was there.

It was especially heartening to see your interaction with names I read on CoinTalk; this all makes it seems more personal.

Being able to do that was always one of my favorite things about going to coin shows. It's also what I miss the most ! There's people on this forum, and all the others, that I've known for over 20 years, but the only time we ever got to actually see each other was at coin shows because we lived hundreds if not thousands of miles apart.

There were even times when parents would bring their children, anywhere from 6 to 10 years old, and it was the child who was the collector, not the parent/s. And they wanted to go to the show and also be able to meet me, and I them, because of all the time I'd spend helping them, teaching them. Those are among some my most memorable moments. And in a few cases those children are all grown up with children of their own, still collecting, and they would reach out to me via this forum or email 10, 15 or more years later just to say thanks for taking the time to meet them, spend a bit of time with them. And the whole time I was actually enjoying it more than they did ! Memories like that mean more to me than a whole lot of things in my life.

So personal, yeah, it is, it doesn't get any more personal than that !

@lordmarcovan, thoroughly enjoyed your reporting. You saw some things I missed even though I was there for four days. Show is big!!! You have a warm mix of the personal and the numismatic in your presentations. With your blessing, I'll add some of my show observations:

I am still cataloging and imaging my acquisitions which I'll post over on the US Coins Forum.

Overall, I found the show very good from a collector's standpoint. Lots of good and new material. I wanted to get to Sheridan Downey's table to look at some new half dime material but the crowd was always three deep.

I thought the public attendance was down from past Winter FUN shows. By Saturday afternoon it was dead with about 30% of dealers already gone or going. I know a couple of FUN Board members and I'll ask them about it when I see them Wednesday night.

Prices still strong. Some dealers were flexible on pricing, some were not. Some prices for better material were really high. That's my personal impression based solely on my own looking/negotiating/buying.

I wanted to attend @Insider's presentation but I was hot and heavy in a negotiation when noon on Saturday rolled around. Did anyone else attend and what did you think?

Signed up two new members for my local coin club at our table. That's actually pretty good.

Attended a nice dinner of the Liberty Seated Coin Collectors Club.

And finally, late Friday afternoon I was spending an extended time at a dealer's table and when done, grabbed my glasses from the top of the case and left. Next morning, I discovered those glasses weren't mine. I ran back to the dealer's table but he had already packed and left for the airport. Naturally, this was the day I left my cell phone at home. Called him the next day and sure enough he had stumbled around not knowing what was wrong until he realized his glasses weren't really his. Anyway, I shipped his glasses to him on Sunday. In my defense, they did look awfully alike.

@Publius2, every day when I put on my glasses I wonder why I can't see as well - and then I realize, same glasses, but the eyes are another day older...

In a similar vein, when I left the show on Saturday, I kept wondering why my key clicker wouldn't open that silver Kia Soul in the parking lot. So I tugged on the door handle to see if I maybe I had left it unlocked. Nope. Locked.

The solution to the riddle? Mine was two rows further down.

Silver Kia Souls are everywhere. Ladymarcovan and I both have them, by coincidence. (She already owned one when I inherited my mother's.) That's why we put decals in the back windows. She has a llama and I have the Robertson clan badge seen in my avatar. But I wasn't paying attention in the convention center parking lot and failed to notice that the car I was trying to open did not have my decal on the rear window.

I could totally see myself doing something like you did with the unintentional eyeglass swap. LOL

I've done this a whole bunch of times in parking lots with cars that are the same or similar make, model and color as my car! Makes me feel like an idiot every time!! :wideyed: (and then I look around to see if anyone noticed my complete idiocy, or thought I was trying to break into their car!

I have a gray Honda Civic.
Honda and Toyota make many gray cars.
A few stickers help to identify my car.

    :)
