Picked this up from Naumann event today/ EL 1/48 Stater ND struck 625-600BC Phokaic Standard Kos Is. off Carian Coast Kos Mint 0.37g. 5.5mm. .670 Crab Incuse Square Daniel Koppersmith Collection Unlisted as 1/48 Stater Ex: CNG 166 Roma XXV
Thanks everyone for wonderfull comments. I have only ever seen this ex. and a 1/24 Stater/ with Crab obverse. Seems that the "electrum" used on Kos Is. had very high gold vs silver content.
I’m jealous. I’ve been wanting a “crabby” coin for a while. I like those Akragas crab tetradrachms, but they get rather pricey. Perhaps I’ll go for one of the smaller denominations, or even a bronze, if the right one pinches me. (Ha! See what I did there?) To get an electrum crab is even sweeter! Bravo!
I did once own this Akragas hemidrachm. A somewhat lower grade piece, but I liked it. The ketos sea monster on it chomping on a fish was interesting. I’d like to find a somewhat better example of this type someday. Sicily, Akragas: silver hemidrachm, ca. 410-406 BC Obverse- eagle right, clutching dead hare in its talons, barley grain behind. Reverse- Crab, with ketos below, swimming left with fish in its jaws. 16 mm, 1.8 g. SNG ANS 1012. Ex-Gitbud-Naumann, Germany, through VCoins store, 5/28/2014.
