Sarah, ever seen pictures of the Loch Ness Monster? I'm saying you're going to have to do better than those if you're expecting us to be able to pick out something as obscure as an overdate on this coin. I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is. Give you an E for effort, though.

The coin looks like it is a Re-punched Date. There are several different varities in 1866 so its hard to narrow it down without more detail around the date area and very clear closeup pics of the reverse.

A good reference book that I would suggest you get would be Rick Snows Indian Head Cents 1859-1869

 

Sarah it is interesting! But eddiespin is correct, sharper image is need on the date and also on the area below/between the "OF in the US OF Am, and the top of the feather beneath. There appear to be something there. Is it a die gouge?

I've lost my good editing program, when I had to reboot my computer. Could you all, put your curser over the picture, then when it's larger left click on the large window picture , then it will be in a window that you can zoom in. That's what I do with some of the other Coin Talk members small pictures. Just this one time? Till I get a better editing software! 213sarah

 

I did as you ask and got a great closeup of the coin and date.
I am no good at knowing about these coins so ill be no help.
But what you ask others to do works and works well

Yes, Sara, I did enlarge it also, but the top of the date is still blurry to tell if it is S-2, S-7, S-? , or none of the above. The gouge (if there) is also part of the identification. Maybe the camera is moving slightly as you "click" it. Take a breath, and let it out, and click before taking another one. Brace yourself and the camera also.

With those new pictures looks like a S-2 to me. No expert on snow varieties, but I do have the book.

 

Thanks for the new photos. I agree, I think it is the 1866 Snow-2 ( FS-01-1866-301) RPD-001. Yours shows the easily seen repunching of the last 6, and also the bar benrath the top serif of the "1" representing a second 1. Some references such as Steve and Flynn "Flying eagles and Indian cent die varieties", nice bookbut sometimes hard to find, says the last 6 is triple punched although Cherrypickers doesn't. Good find! I have one somewheres
