Well, magic showed up in the mailbox today.

My spiral bound copy of Van Allen and Mallis - The Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars showed up today.

In a word - WOW!
I had no idea there was so much stuff in that book. I had glanced through a copy a while back, but never skimmed the whole thing. It is going to take a little while to learn how to use the thing! ;)

Kid in a candy store, I am. And I didn't even get a coin!
(Thing is, I am going to become more freakish than before, and that is problematic. I don't think it will be limited to Morgan dollars, either.)

You are sounding more like a variety collector each day.

Oooo, Cris, I'm so jealous. I've been eyeing that book for some time. I've always liked the Peace $s but was afraid if I got that book I would end up pursuing them more actively also. Oh man, I can see that I'm getting sucked in deeper & deeper here.

Where did you find it? Amazon?

    Nope, it was here:

They only have one more spiral, but they have some of the regular paperbacks too.

Morgans and Peace. You should do it if you like varietys, there is no substitute.

    Super SWEET!!!

First couple of coins I pick up, I hit paydirt already....

1883-CC Doubled mintmark - VAM7 for that coin. Not a Top 100, but still very nice!

Cohibacris, Which book do you recommend for the novice Morgan collector, the one you just got (Spiral bound copy of Van Allen and Mallis ) or the Red Book for Morgans. You seem very pleased with the one you got. I want to get one or the other. Both are recommeded. Thanks.........

Although the price is a little high, I would recommend the VAM book over any other.

It all depends on what you are looking to get.

If you are a hard core varieties collector or think you might be, the Van Allen/Mallis Encyclopedia is the only way to go. If you are just looking for general Morgan knowledge, I would start with the Red Book.

But - I dare say that over time you should own them both! :D

I will take your tip and start with the Red Book. I'm not into the varieties yet. (yet). Did I say yet?? lol. You are probably right, I will some day own both. Thank you .

    Oh, yes I did!!!

Stanton is good and I have also bought from theses folks:

Good company to work through as well. BG sends catalogs in the package, and I think you can just get one, but another interesting reference to look through.

thanks for the link to stantonbooks!

    i ordered:
top 100 morgan die varieties: vam keys
    red book of morgans
us pattern, experimental, and trial pieces
    gloves

and got them today. they mistakenly sent the 2005 red book - it's almost identical to the morgan book - and that'll go back tomorrow or thursday.

anyhoo....they have great, fast service and i'd use them again.
