Why do people collect ugly toned or blast white silver coins when Cu-Ni coins are so much more interesting and beautiful to look at!!

I saw that 5 buck Grover on ebay last night, it didn't have any bids with twenty seconds to go. I was shocked.

My guess is that folks are more intrigued with the precious metal content "of" the coin than the actual coin itself.

IDK about that. I buy a lot of coins based on looks, and I simply find silver to be a more beautiful substance to make a coin out of than coprunickel. I am one of those who hold PM as an investment, but truly wish PM would come crashing down so I could afford to buy many more silver and gold coins. Gold I am so-so on, I like some of the designs on gold coins, but the metal itself does nothing for me. I prefer silver.

I like silver coins. That's my interest right now.

One way of looking at it is that coins have several different properties that give them value:

    - PM Content
    - Face Value
    - Beauty/Design
    - Numismatic Value

Cu-Ni coins do not have that first source of value.

Lets say I have $10 to spend on coins today. I find two different coins priced at $10 each. Both of which sell on FeeBay for $20, so it's a good deal either way. I find the designs of both coins to be equally appealing. One is struck from .999 silver and the other is Cu-Ni. Which one do you think I'm going to buy?

Some do buy silver coins at melt because they like the substance. A collector on the other hand may just like the coin struck in silver because it adds to the attractiveness of the coin, that is why I think the mint still strikes collector versions of coins in silver. If the substance was all they were concerned about they certainly wouldn't spend hundreds for a silver coin when they could just buy a bar.

I like silver coins but also like large cents, IHC, and V nickels. I would buy both. I was doing roll searching though and finding silver coins on a regular basis up until recently so I bought old coppers and nickels instead because why buy something that I can get at face? It is kind of like buying common wheats when I can go to the bank and get some pennies and will find some. I mostly buy coins I would never find in circulation.

I can't think of a CuNi coin I really like (i.e. I would buy for an exorbitant amount of money) except for IKES - I think the older coins like Morgans, Walkers, etc. look better than almost anything produced today. The nickels are pretty good. If a Morgan was copper and a Sacagawea was silver I would still prefer the Morgan.

Yep, ya got that right! I'll take silver any day of the week. I don't own any Cu-Ni coins and I don't want any either. Different strokes I guess. :thumb:

Each type of coin metal has its own unique appeal. Cu-Ni coins do as well – I compare them to nickels which have great appeal, especially when toned. So, I do collect low mintage Cu-Ni coins.

The value will go up after we get the Perth Mint to coin it.

I love silver coins and silver but these are strange times when most
of the exception value is in cu/ ni and other base metal coins. As a
coin collector it doesn't disturb me that true value isn't is silver.

As a silver lover I can still find plenty of fairly priced silver.
