http://www.coinnews.net/2012/07/27/lions-clubs-international-commemorative-coin-approved/ The next one is the Rotaries Club, Knights of Columbus and the the NRA.
Why don't they make a commemorative coin about NASA and the first space programs? They should find one hitting the 50th anniversary mark. I like your idea for a NRA coin, put Charlie's face right on front.
Alan Shepard's flight hit the 50 year mark in 2011. John Glenn's flight hit the 50 year mark this past February. But you know what's the big deal about the first American to go into orbit compared to the Rotary club.
And San Marino actually issued a €5 coin on that occasion, featuring both Gagarin and Shepard. As for the Lions coin, well, I don't think it's a bad idea, but shouldn't the Rotary piece have come earlier? Christian
I think the Lions Club coin will have a really limited market. I like modern commems but I don't think I'd buy that one. Who knows, it may look really spectacular. I'd stand in line for a nicely done NASA coin, however. I think one was proposed a while back but for some reason we never got it.
Yep, there were such plans ... four to five years ago. http://www.coinnews.net/2008/07/18/nasa-commemorative-coin-bill-passes-twice-in-house-4252/ Quite an "ambitious" program actually - maybe that is why the bills never became law. Ah, but won't there be a Mother's Day centennial coin in 2014? Christian
This is surprising to me, I have democrat and republican friends who are NRA members. I do not personally know anyone who is upset by the NRA.
You would think man walking on the moon would be adequate to do the commemorative. I'm sure Mothers Day will get one and Flag day. Hallmark is a more powerful lobby than NASA, which is the Congresses whipping boy. At this time we can't even put a man into orbit. It is a total disgrace.
Space exploration has gone the way of the Edsel for the USA. Now the US has no real programme, save the shell of a programme for Mars that had most of it's funding pulled. Years ago the USA was years ahead of Russia - now Russia is decades ahead of the USA. And they do not have a problem commemorating Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova etc.
Other Commens can be the Sierra Club. Daughters of the Revolutionary War, the NAACP, and the East 127th Street West Side Block Association and PAL.
This guy painted murals in the capitol building. That's much cooler than being the first American in orbit. http://www.numismaticnews.tv/constantino-brumidi-awarded-congressional-gold-medal/
ech. Its the senate. You'd think it was something useful like Rick Plaza or something. Even the Senators don't show up in the Senate anymore accept to make video arguments for canned news. At least in Britain the Parliament shows up.
