I am fairly new to collecting and like collecting PF and PR 70 coins. My question is why is there such a difference in price between PCGS and NGC?

The same reason there is a price difference between a 69 and a 70. People view one as better

PCGS and NGC have their own, proprietary grading standards. While these two standards largely overlap, they appear to diverge somewhat at the top of the grading scale. This divergence, along with marketing, drives a price gap between the two for coins within that range. Enjoy.

Put another way, the snobs at PCGS think they're better and NGC is just the hoi polloi.

That isn't exactly what I wrote.

PCGS and NGC have different grading standards for what we call the same grade. Therefore, a coin can go to PCGS then go to NGC, or vice versa, and come back with two different grades on the label while being accurately graded as per each grading company's standards each time.

When it gets to 69-70 there isn't an honest grader anywhere that can say they see a difference. It a matter of which side the coin lands on as to which number it gets at that point.

I was wondering that too. I often see silver eagles getting graded 69 or 70 and I know they came from the same monster box and minted the same way.
