I bought a 2006 Silver proof set last weekend, but didn't check it closely until I got home. Then, I thought I saw a crack in the plastic, over the dollar. After a closer look, I saw a die crack, starting from the rim at the 5 o'clock position, back towards the center, and ending in the middle of the folded-back area of the baby's blanket. Showed it to my dealer today, and he confirmed the die crack. We checked the rest of his stock, and 4 out of 5 had virtually identical die cracks. Has anyone else seen this? :hatch:
I bought two sets myself and niether had that die crack one has a small deviation in the baby's blanket tho that I hadn t noticed before..
A die crack normaly doesn't add any value but lately any die crack found in the newer proof sets seem to go nuts on Ebay....I would suggest putting one on Ebay to find a value. Speedy
I was debating on buying more of the error sets, but bought the one set without the die crack. I'm holding on to the other one, in hope that it might be more valuable, as an error. It doesn't say much for the Mint's quality control, does it?
Today, I talked to the dealer that I bought it from. He has contacted Numismatic News, and they may do a story on this series of proof set die crack errors.
My dealer received a reply, and it said an article is to be published soon. I'll let you know when I see it.
SCNuss, Considering that Numismatic News is going to publish an article on the new find, you might want to go back to the Dealer and try to purchase the other sets that contain the identical error coins, if they are still available and not at a much higher price! As soon as the information about the article spreads through the Numismatic Community, these Proof Sets should start fetching a nice premium and will continue to increase in value as long as they are hard to obtain. Good luck...Frank
Too late for that, he has the other sets put away, and is waiting to see what happens to their value when the story comes out. I don't blame him for that, he is in the business to make money. But, I do have the satisfaction of the find, and the original set that I bought. I'd be even happier if I am given credit for the discovery.
That should be easy enough to arrange, send the editor an email explaining the story - David.Harper@fwpubs.com
