    Hello folks,

I've decided to start collecting U.S. Currency and I'm starting with this Series because I love the back designs on these notes and they are mostly affordable.

I'm trying to focus on the St. Louis District and trying for a matching set of Burke/Houston.

I'm trying to get the highest grade I can afford now(about $1000) for the first few bills, with hopes of upgrading later.

My question now is I found this $50 http://www.ebay.com/itm/VERY-NICE-Bold-Attractive-1914-50-ST-LOUIS-Fed-Reserve-Note-FREE-SHIP-/230826358454?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35be52b6b6 can anyone confirm this is as they state 1 of only 49 known and is this a good price for the grade (VF as they state?) As I know my focus is narrow I don't want to miss a chance that might not come around again.

    Nice looking note.

Do you have a copy of the Standard Catalog of US Paper Money?
If not, get it. It is probably your best resource if you are going to collect US notes.
I think it has population numbers. Can't find my copy right now.

PMG has 13 of those notes graded. That serial doesn't show up in the verification.
I looked it up because some folks break them out of the slab and doctor them to
look like a higher grade note. (This is not to mean that I don't trust the seller)

I'm not a member of PCGS Currency, so I can't look there. Gotta get that membership
    soon.

I checked Track & Price and found 56 "known" notes. I'm not sure how to up to date this database is, but it does have a sale from 2011 listed.

There may very well be many more notes out there just like this one.

Here are the selling prices for 16 notes graded VF20 to 25, arranged by date.

Edit: Your serial number did not show up in the 56 notes listed.

Hey, funkee. Is that a web site or a program?

It's called "Track & Price" and you can get a trial copy here:

    http://www.trackandprice.com/trial_curr.html

I recently found it myself, and I am still in the trial period. You can buy the various modules separately. If you wanted the entire thing, it costs about $500.

Always easier in hand but looks a sold VF25 from here. If it was Dallas I'd already have bought it from him.

Have bought (and recently sold) to Ty and he's a good guy, never a problem and he always has reasonable prices. You could do worse than this note.

So 15 at that grade range, 1 is a dupe. This would make 16 I guess.

Seems like this might be a little high in price, but It might not come around again for a while.

Only 3 Dallas notes kown according to this book, I would have snagged it too at this price :D.

You will find many more of these notes. Trust me. I see several of these notes being sold each year.

Here's another one for sale right now: http://currency.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=141230&lotNo=34191&ic=ViewItemArchives-LiveMatchesPromo#Photo

I think his asking price is a bit high. Considering in January a VF35 sold for $402.50, I think you could get it for less in an auction format. Since there's no best offer button, I would just call Ty and see if he can knock the price down a bit for you. His number is (888) 9-BANKNOTES.

Yeah I would pop on that VF-35 for that price. I also wouldn't settle for that F-15 as I can afford better. Thanks for your help too funkee. Does that T&P program find current auctions too? Would really help track down what I'm looking for.

    Edit:

I thought it was just a database, but it actually does have a bidding feature. There are buttons to retrieve data from auction sites: eBay, Heritage, Goldberg, LynKnite and StacksBowers. I've tried it a few times, but it seems to fail most of the time.

Picked the first note in my quest to start my collection.

Got it at the 52nd Annual MNS Coin Show in St. Charles MO.

Might have over paid for it and not sure how the skew on the back hurts the grade if any. But I'm happy with it.

I'm a real rookie and have a lot to learn.

I wouldn't worry about the skew in that grade, gonna guess a solid high VF on that note. I think that's a great start and a great example of that note. This in the Dallas district was one of my first notes as well, it's a nice design on the reverse, even if you do have to tilt your head a little to view it...

P.S. Good job on the scans as well...
