Well, I believe that coin collecting has made me a more social charecter, even though it is only with old people so far. I could care less about them famous people. I do watch videos on the internet by those who have not gotten wrapped up in a bunch of fame junk. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46H_lm3OLBE Anyway, do not watch these guys videos if you "value" your time. I mean, seriously, a song about hair? But it is entertaining, and thats all that matters, right?
Welcome to the professional world where clients with money and desire to keep up with the latest fads also want pricey or multiple houses for investment. If it’s for you, try to fit in with these guys and use the “greed factor” you’ve honed from numismatics and you may do ok. Anti-social? Can be very social or you could become a Scrooge.
Well, I think there are really two issues to address here. The first is the question of if coin collecting attracts people who are inherently anti-social and the second is the question if coin collecting makes someone anti-social who would otherwise be considered social. I do strongly believe that there are certain personality types that fall into coin collecting more than other endeavors and these likely include folks who appreciate art and history, who are good with numbers and who are highly analytical. Please note that I do not believe everyone who participates in the hobby-industry falls into these personality types, but I do believe that these traits are over-represented in the hobby-industry when compared to society as an entity. However, the ability to be social or anti-social? I don't know. As an example, I am quite skilled in small talk, but I was a Richard Cranium well before I was interested in coins. So, what does that mean?
what else does one need! ok maybe a new wedge once in awhile. IMO from your post, you seem to not like to waste oxygen on fake mingling. That buddy, is wonderful. You are there for class, not social hour with the fake tans and super bleached teeth. On that note, golfed today. And had a deer play chicken with us on the golf path. Your question - No! Id rather be coin collector than some tweeting mouth breather who is hooked on reality shows. The latter is the norm, whats worse, even if you are anti lol.
Whats wrong with reality shows? There are some I have enjoyed... not much though. Now maybe if they made one for coins...
Talking like those kind. You watch snooky? Really? lol Now GOLD RUSH! and Deadliest Catch are exempt lol =p
I am watching Cajun Pawn Stars. I like the History Channel reality shows like Pawn Stars or shows about antiques.
Not necessarily true. I worked with a guy who was socially inept in person (even he admitted he had issues, seen psychiatrists, etc) but he hung out online all the time, you can always find him in IRC and he's a totally different person online. He'll chat up a storm session but in person won't say one word to you. To me, in our day in age, the internet is a type of shield for some people who wouldn't necessarily talk to people in person. But coin collecting doesn't make a person anti-social, you yourself are either anti-social or not.
For coins? Do you mean various numismatic "challenges" like grading and finding the most valuable coin for $100 in a week? Or just a stupidly nice coin as the grand prize? or both? Either way, I would watch that.
Coin collectors are pretty much the only people I do like. I've been working with the public for 13 years now and in that time I learned to hate their guts.
Coin talk seems like it's more of exchange rather than social net work-exchanging ideas, opinions etc. Although there does seem to be a bit socializing too and perhaps a bit of narcissism with posting coin images?
I have no doubt. I picture you sitting on a bar stool at the teller's counter sweet-talking the ladies.
:bangg: I just remembered. When I got back on ebay I had to change my nick. So I changed it to hermit_the_surly. Does that make me anti social?
I don't think that it makes me anti-social. I still do other stuff besides coin stuff, like going to the pool with my friends and other stuff. So far nobody except my family knows about how I collect coins. Is it strange for an almost 12 year old to collect coins?
