Here's a recent purchase that will be cracked out and added to my Lincoln Dansco set. It brings down to 2 the number of coins left to complete the collection (1909-S VDB & 1922 no-D). Please guess the grade that ANACS assigned to it. Also feel free to include YOUR grade should it differ. As always, the rationale for your grade and comments on the coin (both good and bad) are welcomed. Have fun...Mike
I would guess it to be a VG8. I dont think the hair line would warrant a higher grade. But I am almost always low on the grade so they would say a F-12. I will keep an Eye out to see what it is. Regardless a great coin
In my opinion its a VF-20. Cheek and jaw details look clear with the hair slightly worn, on the reverse the vertical lines in the wheat stalks look very sharp.
I'd say its about F-12, but ANACS probably graded it a bit higher-maybe an F-15 of VF-20. But then again, I could be way off...I mean, its happened before. :desk:
F15....I've been looking around for a nice 1914-D and after looking at a good many photos I think I'm right with this grade. That is...if this is graded by the OLD ANACS. Speedy
Atleast VF-20. I have on 09-S VDB graded from NGC which has the exact reverse condition, but the obv. is slightly more worn and NGC gave that coin a F-12.
My first reaction was "it looks like a solid fine to me, but I wonder if it got the key date bump to VF..." after consulting a couple of books I'm gonna say it looks just short of VF20, but it mayhave gotten it anyway. So I'm gonna say if it was graded before 2006 it got a F15 and if it was graded after 1/1/2006 it got a VF20 grade. I'd call it a choice fine/very fine example if I was trying to sell it, but I'd probably hesitate to spend full VF20 money on it if I was buying.
I will go with a VF-20. I think ANACS would be that or possibly a VF-25 because it's a key and the surfaces are quite nice.
Thanks for the guesses and comments thusfar. HINT: The coin is graded by the NEW ANACS. Have fun...Mike
You guys were all pretty close on your grades. ANACS graded it VF 20. My thoughts on the coin are as follows: The color and look of this coin is what first struck me to it upon seeing it the first time. The obverse is gorgeous, and the reverse is almost as nice. The obverse has nothing but wear and a few contact marks not distracting or out of line with the grade. The reverse does have a dig above E in ONE, and a disturbance along the rim left of 6 o'clock, but again nothing that bothers me. I grade the coin choice VF 20, and I was happy to add it to my collection. An aside... Take a look at the Heritage photos and my photos, side by side: Some observations: 1) Heritage's pics of copper suck. 2) They often look significantly better when you get them in hand, provided you know what to look for. 3) Use this to your advantage in Heritage auctions. 4) Always have Heritage auction coins viewed for you first by a trusted third party, if possible. (FWIW, I purchased this coin from a dealer.) Have fun...Mike
  I can't tell if Heritage's copper pics have become better or worse lately. Everything looks like an old, fugly brown coin or a highly reflective proof :headbang: :headbang:
By the way, is the new ANACS blue label a brighter shade of blue in hand or is it the same as the above pictures?
Heritage's copper photos have acutally gotten worse, IMHO. However, now you have, I hope, a valuable data point showing an attractive circulated lincoln cent that you can use to find other similar looking coins, should you want/need one. Here is a second example, this time a large cent. First Heritage's photos: Here is the coin I received: Looks a bit nicer, eh? Hope this helps...Mike
