Well, as of yesterday, I needed 28 Lincoln cents to complete my collection. As of today, I only need 21. I went to the coin shop earlier, broke down, and bought 7 nice coins, all XF to put in my Dansco. I got: 1912-D 1913-D 1915 1932 1932-D 1933 1933-D Meaning that I only need 21 more: 1909-SVDB 1909-S 1910-S 1911-D 1911-S 1912-S 1914-S 1915-D 1915-S 1918-S 1922-plain 1924-D 1924-S 1925-D 1926-D 1926-S 1927-S 1928-S 1930-S 1931-D 1931-S I'm almost there! After I fill those 21 spots, I'll have completed three full sets (Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt Dimes, and Lincoln Cents). Then I intend to work on Merc. Dimes and Buffalo Nickels. AJM
Congrats on the accomplishment! My son and I are now only 9 "holes" from completing our type set. It's a great feeling when you've got a full set. But when you start to get that close, you almost get so anxious to finish that it becomes an obsession...at least that's the way it is for me. ;-)
Without a doubt! I need the keys and semi-keys mostly now, so it'll be a bit tougher on a college kid's salary, but I'll have to scrimp and save up enough to get that 09 SVDB!
Some series are easier to complete than others. One of the Japanese puppet states set up in various regions of China during WWII was called "Meng Chaing". I have a complete set of Meng Chiang coinage - a cu-ni 5 Chiao dated Year 27 of the Chinese Republic (1938).
Nice job. Looks like you need all the $$$ now. I would recommend purchasing a semi-key next to get it out of the way. Good luck, and nice going.
Congrats on the nice additions! Speaking of trying to complete Lincoln sets, I saw someone at a flea market this past weekend selling a "1915-S" that was really a 45-S that had the four in the date shaved. It wasn't a horrible looking counterfeit, but obvious tooling marks and the VDB on the shoulder gave it away. I guess its a good lesson to be careful completing these sets, even when dealing with the semi-keys.
That 1922 plain will really kick the old budget in XF!! Even the type 1 and 3 aren't really that much less expensive than the type 2. But congrats on the achievement. Without obsessions, it would just be pocket change
Thanks, guys.... I actually also picked up a counterfeit 1914-d cent the same day (no, I didn't buy it) for use in my book, since the real deal is in a much nicer holder!
Nice going AJ! I'm working to upgrade some of my coins----I sold my Good-4 14-D last week and now am hunting a nice one. I had my eye on one and I missed it and it sold-- but I'm sure I'll find one....then I'm going to put some of my later dates in MS. Speedy
Thanks, Speedy! I know my coin dealer has some nice 14-Ds, one of which I was going to buy until I found my own. I'm certain you'll find the one you want! Mine's at about a VG10, MAAAAYBE a F-12 (I'm still no good at grading!). I think I'll be going to the shop again on Saturday.... I want to pick up a 1909-S and a 1915-D or S.
Oh I will for sure---I was hoping to upgrade it all the way to F12 or F15....but they have been going wayyyy over Gray Sheet ASK so I think I'll stay with VG. Speedy
I was just wondering. What do you do once you've collected all those coins? I mean, you paid a lot for those coins. Are you going to sell them for more than you got them or keep to look at them.
Hey youknowwho500 That is just how nuts us Collectors are .....more than likely we will never have every coin there is but we can try! I know for myself I collect coins for the enjoyment...when I complete a set I put it back and start on another one....sometimes I go back and upgrade some of the coins or buy more and do another set. If I have more than I need I sell....otherwise I try to keep most of my coins. I completed my Washington Quarter set (1932-1964) and I sold that.....but that is the only set I've sold....now I'm working on Washington Quarters again but in AU/BU. Speedy
No you just give them to a neighbor hood kid or spend them.:goofer: :smile I'm not familiar with the Dansco Lincoln Album. My Whitman Classic Albums are made so you can add up to a total of 10 pages. This means you can start at 09 and go up to present and then some. I have 10 pages in my set #1 with all proofs on the last page from 1938 up to where it ends. As to what to do if and when a collection is filled. As I slowly filled any collection I got to a point where I began to accumulate numerous duplicates so I started a second collection and then a third and fouth and fifth, etc., etc. For instance I now have 10 completed sets of Lincoln Cents. When I go to a coin show and if I purchase a great Licoln Cent I check to see if it is better than set #1. If so I put that one in there and move the one that was in there to set #2. Then continue to set #3, etc., etc, etc. This has become a real time consuming pain in the -----. So I decided to stop any collection at 10 sets and give away addional duplicates. Not long ago I gave away an 11th set of Lincolns with about 11 missing. Eough is enough.
Just be prepared, the rest of the list you have is going to require you to dig deeper and deeper into your pockets to be able to keep the grade at XF, but nothing like a matched set of coins in a higher grade to look at and be proud of!
