Howdy everyone! As posted in the introduction thread, I finished my IHC collection (one from every date and mint mark). Looking on these boards there seem to be a lot of interest in Flying Eagels and Indian Head Cents and would like to point you all over to The Fly-In Club. Since finishing my set, I have joined the Fly-In Club and have been enlightened to the large amount of varieties the series has. (My opinion on error/variety coins is.. well, I'll share that later.) Here is the story of my collection I posted on the Fly-In Club's boards. ENJOY! --The story-- Ok, as indicated by my 1st post, I have completed a regular ole set of Indian Head Pennies. Now here's the full story. Back in December of 1987, I moved with my family to Hawaii. We lived in a hotel for a few months waiting to get into base housing on K-Bay MCAS. During this time, we stumbled onto a collectibles store in one of the malls down there. My dad picked up a $500 CSA note in our first trip (I got to get a $20 CSA note). This was where I got involved with collecting coins. Over the next few months, realatives would send me pennies and what not. (Eventually, my dad got his Buffalo Nickles from his parents. ) We settled on the windward side of the island and started visiting Mr. King's coin shop in Kailua, HI. What list did we use? Why the trusty ole 1987 Red Book of course. By the time Gulf War 1 had broken out and ended, we moved away from Hawaii in the summer of 1991. Thus ending our coin collecting for a few years. When I went off to college in 1998 and I got a little energized at upgrading some of my common coins (as you can see in the list below.). I also went through each coin with my trusty Red Book and graded them myself. No slabbed coins in this set mind you. So yes, there are bound to be some errors. In January of 2003, enroute to Korea, I stopped back in Hawaii to see Mr. King. Unfortunately, I was a few years too late has he had since passed away. I can still remember going into his shop on Saturdays with my parents looking at coins for hours. Looking at that 1987 Red Book today is just a time warp. (especially at my dad's penciled in notes of grades purchased and prices paid.) In the list below, if there is not an * by the grade, chances are, we got that penny from Mr. King in Kailua, Hawaii. 1857 F-15 1858 LL VF-20 1858 SL EF-40 1859 VG-10 1860 VF-20 1861 VG-10 1862 G-4 1863 VF-20 1864 CN G-4 1864 BR G-4 1864 L EF-40 1865 G-4 1866 G-4 1867 G-4 1868 G-4 1869 G-4 1870 G-4 1871 G-4 1872 G-4 1873 G-4 (not sure if it's open or closed. Unfortunately my blue binder with all my Indians and Flying Eagles sits in Virginia with my folks (and that 1987 Red Book). Just the 1877 with me. Time to upgrade the collection. But I am not getting rid of the coins we got from Mr. King. :smile --end story-- A more complete story is in the works for their newsletter.
Great story!...I know some of the guys that are in the Fly-In Club but have never joined myself. Speedy
Hm.... that Fly-In Club looks like something I would want to join. I love the FE & IHC. The Flying Eagle is the best design created IMHO. Thanks for posting and letting me know that it exists!
Congrats on completing the set. One of these days I will complete mine. I am going to check out this club link you posted.
