Is a 15% Premium Reasonable for a CAC Bean?

I'd keep shopping - It has been said on these forums ( in very good advice and taste ) buy the coin and not the slab (or the label/s if I may be so bold to add). That said, I typically make purchases on the basis of high resolution photographs. Truth is I have picked up some very-very nice Morgans rated at 64 (nice price point) which may not be mint state gems per TPGs but which I thoroughly enjoy looking at both naked eye and under 10x. I do not care for the grades but if the coin is pleasing to my eye this gets first preference to vapid TPG / QPG designations.

It's all opinionated, would you say that a 50% premium is reasonable for a gold bean?

"one priced approx. 15% higher than the other because of the CAC sticker."

I would argue that it is not necessarily so that the reason one is higher priced than the other is because of the CAC sticker.

Getting past that, a 15% premium for a coin YOU FIND MORE DESIRABLE doesn't seem to be excessive.

However, as a general rule you will be better served by being extremely patient for more common coins like the Norfolk, and I think that's the soundest advice here too, given the relative pricepoint and grade you're looking at.

    Good luck with your decision...Mike

I'm a COIN collector, not a sticker collector so I wouldn't pay any premium for the sticker. I would; however, take a look myself to see if the stickered COIN was actually better than the non stickered one. I see no difference so I wouldn't pay the difference.

This is actually what I was aiming for. My intent is to find the most original and problem free coin for my collection. When it comes to these higher end pieces, I've come to grips that I need to buy a slabbed example. Peace of mind for me to know that it hasn't been cleaned or polished. I have up to this point, bought nothing but raw coins, and have done a good job. I do follow the philosophy Marshall, buy the coin, not the slab/sticker.

Another thought is if you wish to make sure you are getting good pieces for your collection how about going and seeing them in person? Go to Long Beach and see coins for sale and coins that will be auctioned off in person so you can verify their quality.

Its not for everyone, but if you are in person a CAC sticker to me is fairly valueless, since its a sight seen purchase. I have seen plenty of CAC coins I still would not wish to own. Just because CAC is saying they agree with PCGS or NGC does not mean I agree with them. :)

Btw, CAC or not, Mike makes a great point. If you find an outstanding coin a premium is nothing to shy away from to be able to own it. Superior coins are worth superior money, and if you know coins you should be able to spot these superior coins. They are not very common, and I have always been happy later on even paying strong prices to own them.
