Hi everyone, My first post to this forum, I'm glad I found it! I was looking at a beat up 1944 D penny today, and I thought the mint mark looked odd. Specifically, it looks like there might be a "horn" on the upper-left part of the D. Could someone with better practice take a look at the coin and let me know what you think? I apologize for the poor quality - I only own a scanner at the moment... Regards, Thrain
It is hard to tell anything for sure from the scan but it looks like it could be a small die chip on the mintmark.
Yes, the photos are hard on my old eyes, but it appears that the part of the horizontal top bar bends down just before the "horn", which would lead me to think at this set of photos that it was a ding that pushed metal from the bar to the end of the "D". No Denver mint mark had a curved upper bar. Just some damage I think. Welcome to the Forum! Jim
