Yes, I did notice the glossiness you speak of but don't see lines like it had been tooled or whizzed. Is the coin enclosed in some sort of enclosure when it is made into a key chain. This is definitely something that many people would not know about I would think, the affects of coins being made in to jewelry, with the exception of drilling a hole in it to wear it.
I know what you mean, I have seen tons of seated coins being sold for 2x melt plus that almost looked bleached. Of course your coin should be worn to nothing before making it white-faced. Of course you have others that buy coins that look like turds since those are least likely to be altered. I was a at a coin show and encountered the beat up large cent and showed the large cent below to him and he said "that is pretty ugly". The guy with him thought it was funny when I said "I'll take it". Well the price was right and you know it wasn't cleaned. Who would intentionally make it look like this? It is different buying coins retail than at auction though because you don't know how long it sat and how desirable the coin is to others. On an auction like mine though when a coin gets no bidders, you can't help but wonder "what is wrong with it? Why does nobody want it?". On the other hand I see coins selling for much more than I think they are worth really and wonder why they are bidding so high for it. Of course my first coin buying experience is one where I got some real deals because they were coins in books at a PM shop where the prices weren't changed.
I won something last week by being the only bidder. Who knows why nobody else bid? I got a great deal, that's all I know
I hate to burst your bubble but he is right. This coin is a cull, harshly cleaned. And full date V nickles no liberty showing sell for around 50 cents here if you can find anyone who wants them. This coin has the look of a polished coin you would see in a set in a frame.
As we said before, if you or Detecto has any coins that look like that he should sell them to me for 50 cents.
I have around 100 V nickles you can have for 50 cents each, and if you wish some names I know some dealers who can get you more. Jim
Sorry buddy16cat, I have to agree this coin looks very polished/whizzed/rock tumbled/etc. $1 isn't a terrible price, if shipping was free.
I think the moral of the story is: if you like it, then so what? I've bought many coins cheap that others thought were butt ugly. I guess it's kind of a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" kind of thing. But for me, I will buy a AG-3 problem free coin before buying a coin that is harshly cleaned. But on the flip side, some people actually like "whizzed" coins.
I like it and think the price was definitely good for it. I believe what one person mentioned about, that the glossiness may be because it was embedded in a key chain or piece of jewelry. I did edit the picture a little and think it has nice details. I have coins that have been harshly cleaned, just because many older coins have been cleaned at one point and don't see any harsh lines on this coin. You can't exactly argue a price when it was a dollar. I would like to see some examples of a similar coin that is in a cull lot. Does anyone have an example like that, a similar coin in a cull lot for 50 cents to support these statements? I know it is common for people to judge value of a coin they never even bid or shopped for, let alone purchased. This looks good to me, and the details are F/VF telling by the edited pic below. I still have to wait really and see a scan of it since the picture is a little weird and was done using a cell phone.
I don't need my bubble bursted and would have to see a similar coin bought for 50 cents to believe it. If you have an example, feel free to post it.
I know what you mean, I posted a large cent earlier that even the seller thought was butt ugly and expressed that while shopping at his show table.
Why ask people here what they think about about a coin if you do not want to here what they have to say.
Can I see these v nickels you will sell me for 50 cents a piece. What grade are they? This coin has details that are around F/VF and would like one similar for 50 cents.
That coin would be in my cull box, which I do sell for around .50 each. If it makes you happy and you like it, that's all that matters but don't post a damaged, polished coin and and get defensive when that's pointed out. We have all made mistakes and bought coins that we later found out were not the "deals" that we thought. You should evaluate all of the opinions you have been given and store them for your next purchase. As far as you not believing that you could have indeed bought a similar coin for .50, do you honestly think that, that many people would lie about it? Most of my "cull box" coins are worn down average dates but there are some that have F-XF details but have problems i.e polished, damaged, whizzed, corroded etc. I would not even put one of those coins in a 2x2 unless it was a scarce date. They are out there, even if you haven't seen them yet.
I don't need to be called out on anything on my polished up, damaged coin that is a cull that goes for 50 cents in Alabama. It looks good to me. The purpose of the thread was to talk about coins not bid on which makes you wonder nobody bid. Since I no longer want to be "called out" I just put you on ignore. I will post any polished up, cull coin that I made a mistake on. It was a dollar, has nice detail, and looks good to me. People can solicit their opinoins but I always tend to listen to those that seem most knowledgable. I can't even tell what is up with the coin since the pic is some wierd cell pic. The seller is having Paypal issues though and if my payment doesn't go through I am going to cancel. I could see though that this coin is 50 cents in Alabama, but more on the East Coast which is another discussion. Coin prices in different parts of the country. A table at my small local coin show is $80 and rents tend to be high in the areas where coin shops are located since they also include jewelry and PM. I do see how this coin though would have been used in some sort of jewelry maybe that explains the lack of lines but that glossiness. Of course it could be the pic as someone mentioned that gives it the appearance of being polished. Of course I could present the ugliest turd of a coin and someone would say it was altered like someone purposely made it look like that.
