I like your philosophy. Im kind of leaning that way too. Mainly just want to go after the big fish anymore. More satisfying.
Vess1 What finally made me react to this thought were my two children, who will eventually need to either continue to collect or sell. I would hate to have them go through a tremendous amount of lesser quality coins to liqidate. Every coin would be a potential loss if they didn't have adequate knowledge. It will be easier for them to determine, and harder on a dealer/buyer to disguise, their true value. I'll bet they get more for my collection even though the total dollars would be the same.
Take as much as you can. At the last fun show I spent $3300 on one coin and I bought alot of coins that week.
How about this headline http://www.bhpioneer.com/local_news/article_78807710-c82a-11e0-b0d9-001cc4c002e0.html
I think that "art" can be subjective. Some people view coins (or gold or silver bars) as "art" but some other people may not view coins (or gold or silver bars) as "art". Everybody views "art" differently and it depends on the coins (or gold or silver bars) and it also depends on the person that you ask about it. Just an opinion.
Speaking of money spent at coin shows......uuuuhhh I spent zero $$$ at the Birmingham show Friday. Maybe next time....1970, did you get to the show?
I did go to the Birmingham show on Friday but I did not buy much. I took $300 cash (plus gas money) with me but I only spent $106 of the $300 at the show. I bought only one silver art bar and a fractional gold coin at the show. I did not go back yesterday and I was not planning to go back today. Next year, I plan to go back to this show and I will also shop around at the Birmingham coin shops when I come back to this show since I met some of the dealers there.
Anything you want with unemployment below 4%. But I am from Wisconsin and retired in South Dakota where my grandsons are living. And it does not hurt that South Dakota has no state taxes and no taxes on coins, currency, and bullion. South Dakota is also a great place to hunt agates. We have Fairburn agates, Bubblegum agates, Prairie agates, fossils, coral and of course gold panning. If anyone else likes to hunt agates let me know and if you come out to the Black Hills I will take you out agate hunting. Jim
Dougs Coins in B'ham are pretty decent folks. On Sept. 22-23 there will be another show in Pelham (B'ham) apx. 75 dealers. There are two Pelham shows each year. There were some nice coins at the Bessemer show....I just went with specific needs. There was a nice 1923-D St. Gaudens PCGS MS63 for $1725 that got my attention but I kept on moving. I did splurge at Milos tho.......
I heard of the Pelham shows. I went to last year's September Pelham show but I did not buy much there at that time because there were not many silver art bars at that show since that show came after spot silver fell 10% during that previous week and dealers might have been holding back inventory because of that rapid drop in the spot silver price. I am not sure if I am going to this year's September Pelham show but I will think about it.
I go to one or two shows a year but spend very little. For me it's more about saying hi to friends. I'll spend $800 on air and hotel but not find much I wish to buy. It's all about the fun.
Coin shows are fun to go to and that is why I like to travel to various ones during the year. I do like talking to some of the dealers and to other collectors about certain things. I go to anywhere between 10 to 20 coin shows a year and I enjoy it very much. Even if I do not buy anything at a coin show, I still had fun just being able to go and to look around and to talk to some of the dealers and to hear about certain coin shops.
