From those pictures, yes, I would say the coin has been altered sometime in the past. Some of those gashes on the obverse look pretty harsh. This wouldn't necessarily "grade" at a Third Party Grader such as PCGS, however it does appear to have VF details and is probably worth somewhere in the $10-$20 range.
thanks again...this is another from the great grandfathers collection...he didnt collect much of strong value, i got like 4lbs of wheats, this, the half dime and a couple merc's...id say the best coin i got is a 1909 vdb that was buried in the wheats and that is not in great shape either
But I suppose there is a sentimental value attached, and that is even more important that monetary value.
yes true...im glad to have these coins regardless of monitary value. i also really enjoyed diggin through all the wheats!
Oh, I'd call it a VF25 or so. Probably cleaned, but a lot of them were so, it would probably be in the $15 range.
