We don't have any circulating commemorative coins over here in New Zealand. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has been ripping off collectors for years by putting out far too many medal-coins & charging far too much for them.

Another (longer) article about the RCM issuing too many collector coins is here:

    (note: two pages)

Guess that the Canadian Mint does pretty much the same as the French Mint: They make so many different commems every year that it has become impossible for almost every collector to get them all. Guess that collectors of pieces from CA and FR (have to) pick those issues they are interested in, and ignore the others. Unfortunately that seems to be a successful business model ...

The RCM declared net profits in 2005 and 2004, but incurred losses in the 3 years previous.

As a collector, you do not have to buy every item that the mint puts out. After all, to the people complaining, are they coin collectors or RCM-product collectors (or reluctant retailers as the second article may have suggested)? Don't like the commemorative celebrating the 73rd anniversary of the first basket weaved in Petawawa, Ontario? Don't buy it!

Hello Aidan, it is a melting pot here today. 33 degrees Celsius, feels like 47 degrees with the humidity factored in. Don't feel like doing much, it's difficult just to think clearly in this weather, so I'm hanging out underground seeking comfort.

The indication of the unpopularity of some of the previous Canada releases has been their life in the aftermarket.

Although not really recent, when someone attempted to auction off one of the 1976 Olympics Commems at my local club's meeting, several folks said, "Another one!"

Some of their items are quite nice, but for the budget minded, they're out of reach. We will get a few here and there that we like, I suppose, as funds permit.

Don't recall that Basketweaving commem, jello_g, may have to look that one up :)

yeah i think the RCM has been over doing it lately. Not that i'm tired of collecting, it's just that the commemoratives will start losing their appeal when every other coin is "special".

The Australian mint i think has been issuing a lot of commorative 50c and dollar as well. Whenever i visit I find i have to save up most of my loose change because they are ALL different!
