Hi all, I just received this 1937 nickel as part of a package that was advertised as a proof coin. I would love some assistance figuring out: 1. Whether it is a proof coin 2. Whether it's circulated or uncirculated 3. Whether it's a doubled chin or small chip/break 4. Whether the L in Liberty is doubled Many thanks! I'll be out for a bit, but can try to retake pics later this evening if these aren't clear enough.
Looks like circulated coin to me. Possibly cleaned. There is a double line on the lettering don,t know if it is doubled.
1. not a proof 2. impossible to say from images 3 and 4 I would say the doubling under the chin and that seen on the L are probably from some die deterioration.
1 Definitely not a proof, not struck well enough and the die shows deterioration (see number 4) 2 hard to tell but it looks like there could be wear on the horn. 3 Couldn't really tell 4 See "Die Fatigue" and "Die Polish" in this link http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/content/StrikeDoublingFlyer-PDF.pdf
My opinions, nice coin. 1. no, I almost always identify a proof by the rims and edges. sharp 90 degree rims. 2. yes, slightly circulated, I would say AU55 to AU58 3. no just die wear and probably a result of some debris build up on the die, such as metallic particles and grease compacted in that area. 4. no, machine or mechanical doubling.
