Detecto if you just settle down and focus on a few
areas you like you'll be able to find a few good
dealers to supply you at fair prices.

And to think, just the other day I was contemplating going to a nearby estate-type auction house to see if I could come across some coins up for bid. Good thing I read this post. I kinda figured that it would be a long shot trying to find a deal at a general purpose auction house. Maybe during a snowstorm when no one shows up…

I don't know what you're doing wrong Detecto, I picked up 2 Mexican Libertads today for $22.50 each at this auction today. http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/photopanel.cgi?listingid=1481144&category=0&zip=28 081&kwd= After the 10% BP and tax I still came out at $26.32 each. Now the regular Silver rounds went between $45 and $62.50 each and the 10 ounce bar went for $340. You just have to know when to hold em, when to fold em, when to walk away and when to run.
I bet you probably have a reputation that precedes you with the other bidders and they just like to run you up. I wonder if any of them are members here?:)

If you wanna really get stuff for cheap all the time, you need to quit going to the auctions and open up your own brick and mortar coin shop.

I've only gotten a few good deals at auctions.

I don't really expect "deals" at auctions.

But when I can buy a certain coin all day long online for $10, and it sells for $25, it silly.

Not only that but you waste time, money, and gas going to that auction.

I noticed another poster said something along the lines of I should not expect problem free coins for damaged prices, and I don't. I hardly see problem free coins at these auctions.

Heh. Years back I got good deals on world coins, because a lot of people only bought US coins and paper money. Now there are buyers for world coins, tokens, and other things.

But like I said, I don't expect things cheap, but I would like to be able to buy them for roughly the same price you can online or from a B&M. That's hardly the case anymore.

Now I've been noticing IKE dollars bringing $3 on up. You can still get those from the bank for face value.

Yes auctions can be a waste of time but every once and a while you hit a good auction. I was at a auction last year where they sold me GSA morgans for $100 each and a PCGS MS66 steal cent for $4. I was at a auction in Sturgis a few years back that was just coins. It started at 9am and buy 3pm most of the people had left or ran out of money and that is when the deals started, junk silver at 50% of melt, Mint state indians at $4 and $5 each and even some gold coins. By 5pm I had spent over $3,000 and had some great coins. Its like searching coin rolls, every once and a while you get a good one.

"Years back?" You mean Detecto isn't a teenager? I honestly thought he's about 14 or 15 with some of the statements he makes.

We all thought that. He says he's 20 years old, but that's really hard to believe.

So stop wasting time, money and gas by going to those auctions and just buy on line. Problem solved!

But if you didn't have something to complain about, you'd have no life at all.

I didn't even need a reported problem notice to realize that any thread that Detecto starts, after about 3 pages the same characters start their comments and cartoons.

Stop right here! If you can't at least post personality neutral posts, then don't post. If that is hard for you to do then keep at it and I will solve your problem....for a long time.

    Sorry Jim.

I take a risk in posting this, but I must speak my mind.

Detecto is not blameless in all of this.
It is a very rare occasion when Detecto posts something worthwhile.
I think he knows exactly what he is doing when he posts his rants.
Everyone, moderators included, knows that when he posts his inane drivel
that the same characters will chime in with their comments and cartoons,
not after about three pages, but sometimes in the very next reply.
Instead of the moderators coddling Detecto and threatening time out for
those responding to his posts, why not head them off and delete the threads
he posts that will draw those characters in. Those types of threads are easy
    to spot.

Someone's forcing you to read what he (or anyone else for that matter) posts?

When you reply to threads like you've done in this thread how do you think that reflects on you?

You're right, Peter, but I still stand by my assertion that Detecto is not blameless in any of this.

3 years ago, silver was at $15.38 per oz.

5+ years ago (eBay was White Hot) for coin sales.

I'm thinking you're simply blowing this stuff way out of proportion with reality to attempt to alleviate your frustration.

And whatever made you think that just because you attend an auction, that you have to leave with something in hand?

    Just a question...

Are you upset that you can't get best deal on a coin or are you upset that you can't get it at cheap price to sell for a profit margin in eBay or elsewhere? IMO, that guy who follow red book. That person is a true collectors. A true collectors will not care about profit, but to have it in their hand. I would do same when I want specific item for my personal collection.

If you have been going to these auctions as long as you say you have, you should be more prepared by now. No need to stand when you can just bring a chair... I always bring a chair and something to drink, sometimes I even sell the drinks to the other participants (with permission from the auction company) while I am waiting for lots I am interested in.

Never said he was, or wasn't. My point is that everyone is responsible for his or her own behavior. Anyone who looks back at their own posts and is somewhat embarrassed by what they posted, and there are several of you who should be, is welcome to edit them or request a mod to help you edit them.
