This 1884 dollar belonged to my Grandmother. I'm pretty sure she didn't do anything to it other than keep it in a box. As far as I can tell the mint is "s", although appears to be the most worn part of the coin. I think it seems like it's in decent condition, and I've read 1884 is a more valuable year than others. Can anyone tell me (roughly) what this coin might be worth? A range would be fine. I know basically nothing about coins other than that you shouldn't clean them. Thanks.
Welcome KO, The coin is worth more than $21.09. You are right it is a good year. In MS 65, it bids at 210,000. This coin looks XF to me, otherwise around 40 to 44 dollars. Best of luck, hope you hold on to it.
But when you hold onto it you should do so by the edges, resting it on your hand can place oils on the coin that could give you issues with how your coins look.
I was thinking it looked like extra-fine also because it does seem really detailed, even the ridges around the edge are still very sharp instead of being rounded down. (It may be hard to judge from this not-very spectacular photograph.) I think the fact that it's over 100 years old is really cool and is worth more to me than $40, so I probably am going to hang on to it.
I would buy an airtite holder since it is part of your family history. Also, I understand what you mean. The Obverse is better than the reverse, which holds the coin to XF in my opinion. If it were an AU coin it would be worth about $225 to $250.
