Got a skunk box of halves yesterday (from a branch that's usually skunks). But it was an odd box. I sliced open the paper seal (Brinks box) like I usually do, and found this:
box of halves july 13 2012.jpg
It's a lousy pic, I know. But hopefully you can see it. There's both brinks and String wrappers, and some appear to have been open and carefully closed back up.
Anybody ever seen this? And moreover, is there any way a box can be opened without breaking that paper seal, and closed up again?
I'm assuming Brinks just made a box with some rolls they just wrapped mixed in with rolls that somebody carefully and sneakily closed up and dumped off (that Brinks thought were still machine wrapped).
Either way, I think I'm done with halves from this branch.

I had the same thing my last loomis box. 90% looked tampered with. I didn't get to see if the seal was on the box but the bank I picked them up at has a standing deal that they order just for me. Still checked them as I wouldn't be able to live with myself not knowing for sure. $2000 in halves and 1 64 so at least I got something out of it.

Hey everyone. Great thread. I'm brand new to searching, just started a week ago. Went all over to banks looking for rolls of halves, but nobody had any. So, asked a cpl tellers to order me some and finally found one bank that would do it. Got, the call yesterday that they were in so ran down and grabbed 10 rolls of halves.

    First 9 rolls - skunk
    last roll - 1 90% (64)!!!

Not bad for my first go at it right. Got so excited that I ran down and got 20 more rolls... skunk. Oh well, from what I'm reading here just finding some silver my first attempt seems pretty good. I think I'm hooked now and will start making daily trips down to that bank to buy rolls/boxes. And my chase for silver begins...

    Weekly results:

    Quarters ($560 searched): Wash x8
    Dimes ($1775 searched): Roosie x10, Merc x2
    Nickels ($450 searched): War x11, Buff x3
    Pennies ($32 searched): Wheat x27
    Halves ($1924.50 searched): Franklin x4, 90% x6, 40% x23, and a beat up 1986S Liberty Commemorative Clad Proof
And 9 Ikes, with no rare die varieties.

Another great week! I know my luck with halves is bound to run out soon, today's box had 4 Franklins and one 40%... actually, yesterday's box had a 90% ender, today's had a Franklin ender, and I found a Roosie ender today as well. It's kinda grungy but I was kinda excited to find my first Liberty Commem clad half, and my first 1987P which I think finishes my NIFC collection. Total silver found this week was 9.952 ozt. I hit 75 oz for the year today too.

Foreign this week: 82c Canadian (including a George VI penny), 50c Panama, 5c Bermuda, 50c Mexico, 1c Peru, and 1c Trinidad.

    Today's results:
    $3 Pennies: 67 copper, 1946S.
    $10 Nickles: 1951P,1946S, 1943P War.
    $15 Dimes: Skunked
$340 Quarters: 2 full rolls Bicentennial, 1964D Silver.

A Canadian Quarter, and a Japanese coin that Coinstar rejected and someone left.

No halfs or dollars, maybe I'll ask to actually order a box. How much is in a box of half dollars?

Lon, yes that is very frustrating. Two things cause this to happen. The first is you can actually order the flat cardboard boxes yourself and then seal them as I know there is a guy that does that not too far from me. He turns the boxes in at one branch but when any of the sister branches "order" a box, they just transfer them. The other is more common. Unfortunately, a lot of searchers "re-roll" the coins and turn them back into the banks in a $500 box after they go through them. When this happens, most of the banks just verify the 50 rolls and then re-seal them and sell them to customers. A couple of times when I was hitting halves hard, I even found a note inside.

I hate it because we all look forward to the hunt but as soon as you open one of these boxes you know you wasted your time and efforts. Hopefully, you dumper only uses that one bank.

Yes, hopefully. I wonder if I switch to another branch of the same bank if it'd be the same deal. If the bank itself is the one resealing the box, then I suppose a different branch might be ok.
I would just think that when Brinks gets halves in, BWR in a box or not, they'd have to check them. Guess not.
