It's a Canadian quarter, 1944, well circulated, the N C on the obverse is a counterstamp. These are 80% silver if I remember correctly.

There's just no way possible to tell you why that coin was counter stamped. It could have been to go to a specific bar, maybe Ned Calley's Bar and Cafe in Balsak. Maybe it was to a house of ill repute. You just never know but I think there's a couple of books on counter stamps. Look into it. Google is your friend. :thumb:
Given that it's mid 20th century, it's extremely doubtful that the counterstamp can be traced. Moreover, given it's a mid 20th century emission -- and quite circulated at that -- its value is probably its melt value.
