I can see nothing behind the hard hit and gunk - or is the hit what you are asking about? Have you checked markers? With such a well-known variety, information is readily available, and considering you have the coin in-hand, you really should do your homework first. If you get stuck along the way, that is the time to ask for help and is the best way to learn. That said, and even with the poor condition, the mintmark appears to be in the wrong position.
It would appear that the "D" had been subject to some post mint damage. For better photo references, check out doubleddie.com. It's a handy resource for over mint marks and repunches of all kinds.
Thanks very much! I did some homework, but I couldn't be conclusive. I'll continue to investigate. My sense is that it's *not* a D/S, but I'll keep researching.
Welcome Ronin93 to the forum! I agree with your intuition, and the others who said PMD. The north chunk is the wrong size and shape for the OMM-1, but looks correct for the scrunched part of the upper D from damage. Jim
No problem, the 44 D/S OMM is a tough variety to find, been trying for 15 years going through over 100,000 wheaties with no such luck.
Thanks everyone, I'm glad to have found this site. I've been a collector for a little while now, but I haven't joined any forums. I appreciate your insight.
Definitely not a D/S. PMD -- notice how the chipping of the D (which makes it seem like there's an "S" to the NW of the mintmark) is similar in location to the chipping of the numerals in the date. Check this resource out -- probably the BEST online lincoln cent variety/error resource: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/OMMS/1944omm1and2.html coppercoins.com is also a great way to compare DDO/Rs and RPMs with the pictures and die markers he uploaded.
Best of all of them? I will agree to that. I have only been a member for about a week now, but before hand, I did tons of research and when I had a stumbling question, 9 times out of 10 I would somehow wind up on this site and find the answer. Everyone on here is super friendly, super helpful, and super knowledgeable. Thanks everybody. Because it is everybody that makes this forum the best.
