So I have about $50 every week to crh. I'm looking to dibs silver so what's the best denomination to search?
Many people would say halves are best, but I've had dismal luck on that. And that is really what it is....the luck of the draw as to what coins you get. You might be in an area where the halves are already searched and you will get nothing. Or you might get lucky and find some great rolls of older silver coins. I have had more luck with dimes as far as finding # of coins that are silver, but lately, have found almost none. Have found only a couple silver quarters, and a few silver war nickels. All I can say is search the coins you like best. Or take a chance and get some half dollars and see if you can do better than me.
With $50, you will have the best luck with pennies. You won't find any silver, but you can go through two boxes of pennies with fifty bucks, and you're bound to find something good every week. With only 50 in dimes you're likely to get skunked a lot. Even worse odds for halves. But if you're dead set on finding silver, I'd go with nickels. War nickels turn up pretty frequently. CRHing is all about volume.
You say $50 each week. Does that mean you have $50 each week to add to the CRH pot, or $50 to use total from here on out?
If you can dump and buy daily, dimes might not be terrible... Or you could surf teller trays for half dollars.
Hi Paper, First I would like to second other's thoughts about dimes or nickels. WN's and silver dimes show up a decent amount and you will be hard pressed to find a bank not holding $50 of those coins. If you really want to sort halfs here's what I'll say. Back when I was a poor college kid I would sometimes order a box or two of half dollars, and slowly buy the rolls from that box. 1 box has 50 $10 rolls. This would require you to do this 10 times. So it's not going to be very fun if you get more than 1 skunk box. But if you have any luck you could get a lot in one box. Quickly flip the silver and have perhaps $100 to sort rather than $50. If you're looking to sort to hold and convert you're money to silver I think you're going at this the wrong way. Good Luck!
With only $50 to sort with, I would strongly suggest you mainly look for a job. I don't know how old you are so I won't throw out any ideas. My feeling is that you can easily sort $50 of any denomination you like, around looking each day for a line of work that would suite you. Unless you're very lucky sorting (and have a lot of money to float), even a part-time job will pay better than what most people are finding in half dollars. Hope you land one soon! ~JobIII
I'd test the waters and get $50 of different denominations (except pennies of course) each week. See what kind of silver is available in your area. You'll pick up patterns for your locality soon and can tailor your money accordingly. CRH doesn't require a ton of money to be fun.
Turn the $50 base as many times as possible and enjoy it. It will help if you live in an area in close proximity to several banks. It will take patience and persistence because you will likely have some dry spells and get skunked often. My experience is that if you are diligent, patient and don't give up easily, you will finds some silver in circulation over time. Also, I think it helps tellers to write out what you want on a note card for them and hand the card to them with your fifty dollars. In other words, make it easy for them. For example, the note card could say $10 nickles, $20 dimes, $10 quarters,$10 halves or whatever combinations you want. You may get some push back on halves because a lot of banks will say they don't have them, don't routinely order them from the Federal Reserve Bank etc. However, if you can get halves on a regular basis, there is more bang to the buck with halves because of weight and they are easier to find some silver in rolls than pre-1965 quarters.
