    Contest-Within-A-Contest Results

Here are the results of the 8-question Contest-Within-A-Contest. If anyone believes that I have made a mistake, please send me a Private Message right away. I'm hoping I've got this right.

Please note that one contestant (LFCfan, Post #613) posted an after-deadline-revision with 7 correct answers in a new post, but we can only award 'Consolations' since the contest deadline had closed prior to the revision. The results below are based on contest responses posted in accordance with contest rules and before the contest closed. The Coin Talk forum does not permit message edits after 24 hours have passed, so it was necessary that I restrict our Contest-Within-A-Contest entries with the same limitation.

    Contest-Within-A-Contest Tiebreaker

First, I would like to thank all of our participants in our nested contest. I hope that you have enjoyed participating in this and the Spin To Win Contest. I've enjoyed getting to know many of you, and I truly appreciate the comments and suggestions that many of you have submitted over the past several weeks of competition.

Reviewing our finalists for the Contest-Within-A-Contest, we see the following responses in reply to the question below.

On what day of the week were the first coins struck at the Carson City Mint?

    Tyler G. chose Friday
    Zachkeaton chose Friday
    Softmentor chose Thursday
    Clorox chose Wednesday

The following is excerpted from PCGS.com...

"The Carson City Mint was ready to do business in December 1869. Dies dated 1869 sent by the Philadelphia Mint were received at Carson City by October 21, 1869. How many were sent is not known; no inventory listing of 1869 and 1870 dies has been found." The 1869-dated dies were not used; the reverses were probably held for 1870 and later use.

"The first Carson City Mint coins were silver dollars minted from 1870-dated dies on February 10, 1870, a quantity of 3,747 pieces. All were struck using a press made in Philadelphia by Morgan & Orr... Each 1870-CC dollar bore the distinctive CC mintmark on the reverse. On February 11th, Andrew Wright received the first delivery of CC dollars, a quantity of 2,300 coins. Wright, a watch-man or guard at the Mint, was undoubtedly entrusted with their safekeeping and/or paying them out. An additional three coins were saved for the Assay Commission."

R.W. Julian also wrote about the first Carson City coinage in an article published in Numismatic News in December of 2011:

On Dec. 20, 1869, Superintendent Curry notified Mint Director Pollock that he would open the new branch mint on Jan. 3, 1870. The first bullion was deposited on Jan. 6, three days later. In his letter Curry requested permission to begin coining operations with the 1869 dies as those for 1870 had yet to arrive; Curry got a curt refusal from Pollock, who indicated that out-of-date dies were not to be used.
December 1869 saw one of those events that could have set the new mint back by several months. An earthquake struck Nevada and caused considerable damage in Carson City but the Mint structure came through virtually unscathed. Clearly Curry had done his job well in constructing the building.
Curry had taken into account the quantities of silver and gold likely to be deposited and employees were hired accordingly. By March 1870 there were 43 workers, men and women, and this would grow to more than 80 people by the end of 1875.
The superintendent wrote several letters about the lack of 1870 dies and these items were finally received in early February 1870. The first coinage began a few days later, with 2,303 silver dollars delivered on Feb. 10. There is little doubt that Curry arranged for a special ceremony, with leading citizens invited to view the beginning of coinage in Nevada. All of these silver dollars were paid out to a depositor named A. Wright on the following day.

So while it is generally known that the first Carson City minted coins were 1870-CC Dollars that were issued on Friday, February 11 (and many hobby publications and web sites reference that date), it turns out that the coins which were received by Wright were actually struck one day earlier on February 10th, a Thursday.

    Congratulations to
    Softmentor, our Contest-Within-A-Contest Winner!

You have won One Numismatic Prize!

While a prize was awarded to someone already in the Reel mapping, we were never sure if his mapping for Reel #2 was accurate or not. Because of this, I offered another prize to anyone who posts a correct Reel Mapping for Reel #2 that is different from the Reel #2 Mapping that he last posted before I awarded the prize.

Anyone may continue to post mappings for Reel #2.

Here are a couple of interesting links I found while researching for the contest within a contest questions:

One from numismaticnews.net about the first struck coin as well as the story and history of the CC Mint
    http://www.numismaticnews.net/article/first-carson-city-coins-dated-1870

Also, here is a link to an old CT thread about the CC Mint and the first strike. He includes the second link with a story about a woman who received as a gift the first ever coin minted there (with picture)
