Once every two years, I make a trip to Switzerland for a couple of weeks to see family. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to try coin roll searching some coins from Switzerland. Also maybe make a trip to France and purchase some change (Euros) from them to search. Has anyone had prior experience from searching coins outside of U.S.? Obviously, I want to educate myself on what I would be looking for as far as uncommons and rares.
I'm a Canadian who jumps the border into the US every week to search halves. Exchange rates will sink you
In 2005, I went to Canada and bought quite a few rolls. I bought some from a currency exchange place. I asked how much it cost to buy a Canadian roll of nickels with American money and I was told like $1.70 or some such amount at the time. I was not used to buying rolls of coins for below face value and in the excitement so to speak I bought the rolls of Canadian coins without being given the difference I was owed. I feel the exchange operator knew what she was doing and most certainly pocketed the extra that she owed me. Thankfully, I just bought a few rolls from this particular place. The moral of the story is to be careful when buying rolls from other countries so as to not be taken advantage of from exchange shops.
I've thought about this before, and aside from the US and Canada, Switzerland is really the only other country that I know of where roll hunting for silver is theoretically possible. The 1/2, 1, and 2 Franc coins were silver until 1967, the 5 Franc was silver until 1969, but not 1968.
