I'm sure this coin makes sense to somebody, but to me it just looks like a piece of abstract art. That said, it does make me curious about where (and when) it's from. At this moment, my uneducated guess would be that it's not from Europe... but that's about as much as I'd be willing to bet on.... Help me understand what I'm looking at, please?
It appears to be midevel European to me... It's a hammered coin, common before presses were used. Looks much in the same style of some low grade silver, hammered coins I have from Europe, around 1400 AD.
Might not even be a coin... Could be a Jeton. More of a private token than true coin. Hard to tell from a little pic. Even if it is a Jeton, it is still very old, and very collectible.
It is a Western European jeton, circa 1300-1500. You have the obverse and reverse switched; the reverse is a figure in a boat, as on early English gold. Compare to this: I will try to do some more research later.
Your obverse and reverse images are switched; the one on the left is upside down, and the one on the right mostly upside down as well. It is indeed a jeton, of the "ship-penny" type, struck in Nürnberg, circa 1490-1550.
It is an anonymous Nuremberg 'ship-penny' jeton with fictitious legends, which was issued around 1490-1550. Please have a look at my one, which I posted here before: http://www.cointalk.com/t154668/#ixzz20eX2jo00
