I found this in the bottom of a box in a collection I acquired. Anyone ever seen anything like this? I searched through my Krause and did the usual Google search. I dont even know to be honest if its a coin Looks kind of interesting though. Thank fellow CoinTalk'ers. Jim
Here is an ebay auction for something not unlike yours. http://cgi.ebay.com/Very-Small-Anti...05QQihZ003QQcategoryZ4741QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and another http://cgi.ebay.com/STUNNING-LITTLE...519QQihZ001QQcategoryZ532QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I'd say it's either Celtic or Indian B
It's either a British or French/Belgian celtic stater, either one like this: http://www.romancoins.info/Celtic1.html#brit Or,based on it's tiny size, more likely...this: http://www.pandaamerica.com/details.asp?item=1070&grp=1&categ=68 First thing to do is to determine if it's real gold or plated.
Mikjo0 and Bonedigger, Man you guys are good  I can't find it anywhere in my KM or Friedberg gold books
I too think it is Celtic but am not 100% certain it could be a Fanam LOL Could I suggest that you send a pic to Chris Rudd and ask him if he could possibly ID it for you? explain the circamstances of how you optained it to him, I am sure he would help. chrisrudd@celticcoins.com De Orc
Thank you all. De Orc, I have as you suggested emailed Chris. I will let you all know if I hear anything back.
This looks more like a gold Fanam from one of the Indian Princely States - possibly from Travancore.I'm sure that Biju (Spiraltreet) will know something about this coin. Aidan.
Jim, Check this ebay item similar... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280012124828&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_ReBay_Pr4_PcY_BID_IT
The unfortunate thing with this one is it has great similarities to both Celtic & Indian LOL very confusing if I look hard enough I think I can see a bit of a horse but then again am i seeing it because I want to!! De Orc
Dear Jim Thank you for your email. Your coin is an Indian Fanam, a name given to both gold and silver coins which are common in the southern part of India. Its value is nominal, probably under £10. I hope that this is of some use to you. With best wishes.
The designs on these fanams are remarkably similar to celtic coins but two things SHOULD have tipped me off. #1,the tiny size of 7mm is just too small for most staters.Fanams are known as "the world's smallest gold coins" #2,the design is a bit sparer than most celtic designs. They tended to try covering the blank areas a bit more. Good work Bone,DeOrc,Silvereagle,Aidan and of course,Chris Rudd, the maestro of celtdom.
hello... it looks very similar to the Anantaraya fanam of Travancore Princely State in India.. But I think, something is strange about this coin.. I'll let you know tomorrow..
While we wait for spiralstreet..... It's also interesting that fanams were issued 200-300 years ago and celtic coinage is almost all from 1,900-2,100 years old.
hi i agree with aidan. but i cant tell what it is. it looks indian but at the same time it looks celtic.?
Constantine, the size of the coin is far too small to be a Celtic (Ancient British) coin. That is why we came to the conclusion that it is from southern India, with Travancore being the most likely country of origin. Aidan.
LOL how about these 2 then?? both under 10mm and both definatly Celtic De Orc :thumb: Ps forgot to say what they are LOL Silver is a Marseilles wheel Bronze is a treelike trophy va Both bought from Mr Rudd
They are stunning, simply stunning. I really want to drop some coin on a few really nice Celtic pieces but the two key aspects of this idea never seem to be around at the same time together. The coins for the purchase and the coins to be purchased, LOL... B
