Interesting message from NGC. They are having a "crossover special". "For a limited time, if you submit a PCGS-certified coin for CrossOver and it doesn’t meet our strict grading standards, you won’t be charged the full grading fee. Your coins will be returned in their original holders, and you’ll only pay $5." "You’ll benefit from NGC’s consistent, accurate grading, and your coins will benefit from the protection of the industry’s most secure holder. Don’t forget NGC-certified coins are backed by NGC’s comprehensive guarantee, and are eligible for inclusion in the NGC Registry." First, it sounds like they may be losing ground to PCGS. Second, I wonder how many coins WON'T crossover. Finally, I hope that's not a threat that they'll change policy and only allow NGC coins into their Registry Sets.
I guess it is time to send in my crossover candidates. I have been waiting for something like this to spur me to action.
Earlier this year, NGC changed their Registry requirements regarding foreign coins. They are no longer allowing PCGS coins in the World Registries. Apparently there have been some differences in how NGC and PCGS attribute certain world coins. There was quite a bit of grumbling by some of these Registry participants, and because of this policy change, a few had withdrawn all of their Registry sets. Maybe this has something to do with it. I don't know. Chris
I was wondering about that when I read the email too. Are there really coins that PCGS graded that NGC would look at and say "no way" this gets a numeric grade? I'm sure there are some, but I dont think anyone will be getting an amazing deal since you ONLY PAY $5 when they DONT grade your coin. Anyone with legit coins will pay full price to cross them over, how is that a deal? If I am not understanding this offer correctly, someone please fill me in.
I'm pretty sure PCGS is now providing a similar service. Personally, I like the idea. Of course, I'll probably be crossing more NGC coins to PCGS. It's just nice to know that if they don't agree with the grade assigned by whatever third-party originally holdered the coin, that you aren't losing that holder, grader, and/or the money you put into submission fees (unless you purchased the coin already holdered, which is probably the most common case). There will always be competition between the two third-party grading firms, but I wouldn't go as far to say NGC is "losing ground". There will always be that select group of folks that favor NGC over PCGS - Like Matt (LostDutchman), for example. I'm sure there are more, but he's one of the few that I know for certain. -Brian
Just spent the morning going through my slabs for anything that I thought to be borderline under graded. This may well be a good time to do it with some of my OGH coins and see if they will cross higher. Certainly food for thought.
I quickly checked my collection. Sadly, I didn't see any coins in slabs. Oh well, looks like I'll be saving some money and time!
Highly doubtful. NGC has been grading approx 50% more coins per month than PCGS has for quite a few years now.
That's quite a lot of coins. It's surprising to me, too. I'd think otherwise based on the activity levels at the respective forums. Over at PCGS, they talk up a storm, compared to at NGC. Really, this does surprise me NGC grades that many more coins than PCGS.
Quite surprising to me as well. The storm they talk up is all hogwash though. I remember I was told on Collectors Universe that PCGS has never over/under-graded a coin by 2 points. (Ex: MS64 in a MS66 holder) But, not-surprisingly, they also said NGC had. The way they promote PCGS is ridiculous, it's a religion to them. I wonder if it has anything to do with them not being able to keep up with NGC?
What no peaceful oligopoly? I believe that Morgan brought up a good point about OGH. Oh well stiffer competition and more elaborate marketing techniques are better for the collector right?
With this being said, would anyone suggest sending this one in? It is a S/Horizontal S variety that is not designated on the OGH. Currently an MS65RD PCGS. Any shot at 66RD? The coin is full red, thought the lighting in the pictures may make the coin look darker in some spots.
There are two kinds of people. The kind that fight the idea of being pushed into the river and the other kind. The way they impressed me over there they're the other kind.
