As you may know I was hoping to study abroad this upcoming semester in Australia, unfortunately many complications have come about over the months and I'll now no longer be going. I'm a bit bitter atm about the fact I'm out about $1,500 from non-refundable costs but I'll take this as a learning experience and move on from it. The good news is that I'll be starting to collect coins again. This time I want to decide on something specific, last time I just became obsessed with all coins. Since I'm a bit of a hoarder maybe collecting junk silver could be an idea or restarting my Morgan Dollar collection *I have the Dansco Albums* but had sold off my collection to pay for school expenses so I'd be starting fresh. Any suggestions for a new collection?? Atm I'm selling off the random slabbed stuff I have to help fund my new collection. -Zach
Chris: I needed that laugh...thanks. Zach: The Perth Mint has a lot of coins with images of Australia nature, landmarks, etc. It is almost like being there. That could be something to check out. BTW: I like your attitude about the whole thing. I will bet you get there someday. :smile TC

Sorry about that. It's rough, I know what it's like thinking you're going to get to go somewhere and you get let down.

May I say, this is a great attitude, Zach. I suggest coin roll hunting. It's got a lot of advantages. For one thing you can't beat the price. And if you're recently out a lot of money, that might be preferable to spending a large sum on collectibles. Since you are considering junk silver, you'll be finding a lot of that CRHing, and this is bar none the cheapest way to acquire it. You can typically find at least one, if not several, silver dimes or half dollars in a box.
I use to coin hunt dimes/halves but my bank wasnt to thrilled about me cashing the coins back in thrpugh the coin counting machine, mostly the halves since the bags only hold $50. Might hint for pennies again, always fun.
Where do you live, where you find lots of silver in your rolls? I RARELY find anything but 40% in mine...and I'm thankful that the US Bank in Salt Lake City is still friendly when I bring them $2500 in halves...I think mostly because the brother of one of their tellers buys them all to search for errors...
Sorry to hear you didn't get to make it to Australia. I think junk silver is a great way to start a collection. And you should be able find it below melt.
I did receive a mail about someone who plans to study abroad and asked what happened. Basically I started the process back in October and ran into countless problems along the way. The biggest problem was my loan, originally they made it seem as should have a loan sent to the school the program was run through and one sent to the school I was going to. After 3 months of my loan being processed and accepted I was informed this wasn't correct and I had to send a loan to my actual school and they would disburse the money. So once again a headache, I had to cancel my previous 2 loans and file another one just a few weeks ago. Long story short, my money needed to be to the one school by August 1st and the money wouldn't have been able to get there in time. Also my student abroad coordinator I originally started with had gotten fired and replaced by another girl. This girl was new new and didn't have the answers to my questions so it just made it so much more difficult. As far as the $1500 the costs were this -Visa $600 -Application Fee $275 -Plane Ticket $725 *I was refunded $865.82*
Its never good to hear about bad news. But at least you're taking it in stride. Collect a series you like, maybe you can collect Morg... I mean Kennedy Halves. :devil: I hear its quite fun.
I'm really leaning towards junk silver and my reasoning is this. If I'm ever in a position where I need money, selling these coins will be 100x easier then say a slabbed coin. Even if silver goes down or up I'll always be able to sell them for some quick money.
