Returned graded coins from ANACS and NGC. Happy and disappointed, but educational!

20 ANACS + 28 NGC Slab Coins How much per slabbing coins of Total 48...I think I can BUY 2 Sets of 14 Coins of 2008 Proof Set graded Proof70 or Proof 69 of ICG or ANACS.

To expand on this experiment, I would like to see you break the coins out and resubmit... reversing the coins going to the two TPG's. That would be an interesting comparison.

I have no problem with the experiment or the costs if you are truly learning. Now what I would suggest, if possible, is work with a local dealer to assist in learning to grade. My local dealer does not mind assisting me and even spending time talking to me about some of the coins. Just a suggestion that might help you on your next submission.

I would not recommend this. I would recommend sitting down with a few experienced coin dealers/graders and discuss all the coins slabbed by ANACS and NGC. The OP should discuss all the nuances of these coins and discuss the merit of having them in slabs. IMO there are better ways to learn about grading & coin collecting than spending money to the TPGs. I think a membership to the ANA & networking with some dealers at shows might be a good place to start.

This is going to sound stupid but how did you post so many pictures? I was under the assumption that when I click on the Image link, that I can only submit only 4 pictures per post.

Btw I like the 97 Ultra Cam ASE. I'm surprised that a slabbed ASE has appeal like that.

And I absolutely agree. If the OP did pull a switch with the TPG's, I'm sure he would notice a confusing difference in the grades.

It looks like NGC doesn't think it's accented hair.

Did the OP pay for VarietyPLus? If not, they won't attribute it as such. I can't tell from that photo anyway. It's too dark in that area for my poor eyes.

Agreed. Not the best pics to judge from, but I dont see the "wishbone" on the obverse or the broken rays on the reverse.

When you link the pictures to photobucket, or one of the other image hosting sites, you can go on and on as much as you like Jason.

Topcatcoin: I did check this site, http://www.ipotad.com/pages/ah2.html and it didn't match.

mrbrklyn: Thanks for sharing tips. My next attempt will use my Canon Rebel T1i to see if it show more realistic look than my scanner.

micro: No problem. The total cost for ANACS is $525 and the total cost for NGC is $435. ANACS cost more due to variety cost. ($5-$10) NGC is cheaper if not use variety service.

redwin117: Thank you for sharing your thought. I think it's not bad and I will able to break even or make profit on it as I didn't spend any cost on these coins. These coins were hand down to me from my dad and grandpa. :)

jloring: I don't planning to resubmit, but go forward and continue submit new coins based on my learning process. I am still learning, but I have better insight on grading system than last month.

mark h and Collect89: Thank you for your tips. I appreciate it.

JCB1983: Photobucket is great tool for unlimited pictures to post a thread. It does have image link and I use it for this thread.

DMI: As I mention to Topcatcoin. :)

cpm9ball: I will use camera instead of scanner on next time as it seems more confusing than clear. Kennedy isn't accented hair variety. Yes, it will require to use VarietyPlus to attribute it.

geekpryde: Photobucket. I guess everyone still learn something new as I do. :)

    green18: Thanks for mention it.

Well thanks for sharing all those pictures. I gotta commend you on coming on this forum knowing that you would get flak but you came on anyways. As long as you feel like you got your money's worth then that's what really counts. Plus you showed some fellow coin collector's things they likely didn't know already and answered all our questions. I look forward to your next session. ;)

Well if you learned something from the experiment at least you accomplished your goal. But grading is subjective even if its from a TPG. If you crack out the coins and re-submit them back. Some of them may get a grade drop or bump by one point.

If you use the educational value of even just the AU58 $ compared to the MS-62$ and can detect the differences, you will easily pay for the grading fees in time. Education and knowledge can be expensive money wise, but you can use the results for a long time. Au58$ were called "sliders" as they had the general appearance of Uncirculated and could slide by. Many collectors have AU58s in their collection that they still think are uncirculated and will until they send them off also, and then the moaning. Often AU58 coins look higher grade than the MS-62 coins, but the pricing is much different. Study the luster, notice the edges as wear or damage is often there, look for almost invisible criss cross lines on the high points that often changes a MS-63 into an AU 58.

I am contemplating spending $1100 on 3 volumes of books on Gemstone inclusons as the knowledge within them could save me many times that amount, or make me many times that amount, if I can tell a real 3 ct. Ruby from a synthetic one. And like others here, my numismatic reference books have probably paid for themselves likewise. If I don't open the books, I lost. If you don't learn from your experiment , you have lost, Good luck.

I hate to say it but many of those coins could have been purchased already slabbed for less than the grading costs and shipping. Why didnt you just buy all this already slabbed? It would have accomplished the same thing.

Any ASE thats capable of gradng below PF69 never should have been sent IMO. The 69s are a loss as it is.

So even if it is, they won't attribute it unless you pay more? Does that apply to FB on mercs, FBL on Franklins and so forth? No wonder grading is so pricey...
