Has anyone tried getting rolls or boxes from banks they don't have an account at? How did it go and what are some good banks to try to pick up rolls without an account? I have a couple of bank accounts at local chains but at one that has decent rolls, I think I am starting to wear out my welcome rather quickly.

Put a few bucks into a savings account at each bank that you want to use. Have a buy bank and a dump bank so you don't keep getting the same rolls over and over.

If you are hunting silver, mark the rolls that you have searched. I mark mine "no silver" just in case others are doing the same at my bank to save them time and effort.

I think alot depends on the individual teller.
I have been treated well by some even though I didn't have an account. But I also have been refused by many, especially when asking for half dollars.

I find that if you ask for small amounts, they don't mind. However, when you try to dump at a bank that you don't have an account with, most of them refuse. As long as you keep it within 10 rolls, there probably won't be a problem.

I don't do much roll searching, I just want to know, is it worth it?

I have been meaning to try this I have been refused from banks where I had an account. I opened an account at a local credit union. I ordered a box of dimes and box of pennies which they had on hand since someone brought in these old rolls. I ordered a box a week later and they told me after that no more boxes. Problem is I dumped the boxes at the same credit union in the machine since I wasn't aware of another bank with one.

I opened another account around here with a chain with a coin machine but only dump at branches that use Brinks and pick up at a neighboring county that uses some other distributor. I have been refused by some branches, or said they would only give me rolls once because they are reserved for business customers. I don't understand why the one woman asked for all this information including my account number just to tell me no, I can't get $100 in rolls. I emailed a complaint since I do have a checking account and make no interest on the money in it and don't understand why I was given the third degree and then refused. I called a branch that I have gotten some rolls and a couple boxes, one box was skunk along with the $70 in rolls. I called to see about getting a box and I was asked "what do you want this for silver?". I told her I wanted to work on my collection and she told me I need to go to a currency distributor. I called back and talked to the head teller and told him that before I opened an account I was told I can order boxes when I asked about buying their coin machine bag. I was told something I didn't know though, that I didn't need a checking account to use the coin machine without a fee, I may be able to just have a Christmas club account with a few dollars if I burn this bridge but want to use the coin machine versus wrapping. There are a lot of banks around here. One branch though told me "I can buy a box from them" even though I just got some rolls the day before and found this:

I've had luck ordering and returning rolls from banks I don't have an account with. Lately not so much. It really depends on the amount you're looking to pick-up and return.

But most locations require very little to have an account. It's probably easier in the long run to just open a basic savings.

Having an account at a bank in no way guarantees that they will sell you boxes, atleast not for free. It all depends on the attitude of the management and tellers of particular branches. There is this one Wells Fargo that refuses to sell boxes without charging a fee ($7.50 for a box of cents, for example) but another Wells Fargo 3 miles away is more than happy to sell me boxes without a problem and they don't usually bother asking if I have an account. I made this branch that charges fees into a dump bank and have even told the tellers they are my dump bank because they charge fees for boxes.

Getting rolls from banks without being a customer is all about how you present yourself and how you project your attitude. When I started CRH, I would go in and timidly ask for rolls and was rejected far more often than not. I got used to asking, didn't feel weird or anything, and now when I go in, I talk loud, clear, and am very specific about what I want. I also don't ask for rolls, I will say something along the lines of "I need a box of dimes and a box of nickels." Don't allow yourself to seem weak and open to being questioned... the tellers are there to serve your needs, both as a customer and a "potential" customer.

Of course I still run into a wall every now and again, usually with older, jaded female tellers.

If you go to a big bank like Wachovia or PNC you can just ask and most likely they'll give you some rolls. Even if they ask if you have an account, you can say you do because they aren't really going to check if you really have one or not. Hope this helped!

Usually I say "I would like to buy a box of dimes". Yesterday I said "I need a box of dimes" (thanks Merc). They produced my box of dimes quickly and then commented on how the Vault Teller had made all the tellers purchase all of the coin from the vault. I then spoke up and told them I'll take two boxes of dimes and saved myself a trip to another bank. Nice!

I've found you get more flies with honey...

I would never walk into a bank like I owned the place and they were my servants and demand a box of rolls, knowing that the bank has to pay a small fee for each box to get them from Brinks and also knowing that getting boxes of rolls is not expressly a free benefit guaranteed to account holders at my bank.

I've always had very good luck with asking politely if I could buy a box of coins. I don't lie and tell them I have an account when I don't. I don't tell them I need them for anything else besides searching if they ask. The small branch near my office doesn't usually have boxes, but they do have a lot of CWRs. They know me well there and usually ask me if I want any rolls when I'm cashing a check.

Getting a few rolls at a time at a local bank works fine for me. I go in so regularly they must think I have an account. If you're dropping off coins or getting a full box, usually they will necessitate you to have an account in my experience.
