our cent coins have been made from zinc with a super thin copper plating since 1983. sometimes they can be found unplated and the zinc looks similar to silver color.
Would a zinc penny be magnetic mine is not it the exzact same size of any memorial penny buti think like u said it misseed its copper thats why it weights less than a regular penny
you can use a service like "tinypic.com" which is free and post the link. Or save your pic to a file (I save to the desktop), click the small icon on the menu bar on top of the reply window, (It looks like a pic with a tree in it, to the left of the film strip) When that window opens, click the "computer" tab. then click "select files" button. Search files in desktop and click to open the pic file. That's it. My neighbor's grandkids taught me how.
Boy, the plating is really negligible as far as thickness goes I believe. And the normal weight is 2.5 grams which varies on a normal one from 2.3 to 2.8 grams, so weighing it wouldn't tell you much. Get that pic uploaded and maybe we can help ?
I think there is a 98% chance it was done like this video. Even though it says "gold penny", the intermediate step is a silver coloredm penny. There is no measurable weight gain. It is a common middle and high school chemistry lab experiment. In at least 2 different ones, I have seen. After showing them to their friends for a while, they go back into circulation. We see several a year here. Welcome to the forum! http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1262456/make_a_gold_penny/ Jim
